I was watching this show the other night called Strange Addictions and it was featuring some chick that slept with her blow dryer every night. And it was on. She claimed that it was a combonation of the noise and the heat that helped her sleep at night. The thing is, I didn’t find it weird at all.
I have fallen asleep to the hum of my fan for the last 20 years. I don’t know if you would say I’m addicted because I don’t bring it with me when I travel or anything (I do however use a white noise app on my phone), but when I’m home, the fan is on. 365 days a year. My issue is that I need something to block out all the other little noises like cars driving by, rain, snoring, etc. I have a super good sense of hearing and pick up on every little noise, which distubs me & prevents me from falling asleep.
The woman on the show was a little worse off than I was, though. She ended up burning herself in her sleep and they even showed a few scenes of here “blow drying” her body (mainly her legs) while she was in the living room watching tv. Oh, and she had her daughter in her lap. That part was a little weird and I assure you that I only sleep with my fan. Thing is, I’ve tried those noise machines that make white noise (and other noises, too), but they just don’t compare to my fan.
I guess I just don’t like the quiet. I remember back in high school & college, I always needed the tv or radio on to study or do homework. If it was completely quiet, I couldn’t concentrate.
When I first started dating Chris, it was one of the first things I told him about myself. And that he’d need to get used to it. He’s a good man because I know he doesn’t like it, but he puts up with it.
I’ve heard of people needing noise to fall asleep, so I don’t think I’m alone in this.

I could have written your post, practically word for word. In the summer the air conditioner does the job of the fan, but ours runs 24/7/365. Even when I am sleeping alone.
I have taken it on vacations with me… a small fan.
I saw the ads for the show you are referencing and thought it odd she slept with her hair dryer. I didn’t realize it was for noise. As you that part I understand the rest is weird.
Let’s just hope we don’t start eating soap. blerk.
Wow. You and my sister both have to sleep with the fan on.
You two would travel great together.
I on the other hand need complete silence and darkness when I sleep. Earplugs for me
I don’t think the fan thing is strange at all.
[WORDPRESS HASHCASH] The poster sent us ’0 which is not a hashcash value.
My oldest son is bipolar. Since he was little he has slept with his fan on year round. Many times he also has his music on as well. If he goes somewhere and they don’t have a fan he takes his.. yeah it’s that bad . It has become a comfort for him especially since he has severe anxiety as well.
I sleep with a fan on spring through fall and a humidifier in the winter. In college my roommate would be blowblow drying herher hair right when I had to get up it rocked me right back to sleep. Hairdryer and vacuum noise is my favorite to fall asleep to. Haha so weird.
I sleep with a small air purifier that creates a white noise – I can’t sleep without it cause I hear everything going on.

I thought I would like white noise but having the fan on at night makes me anxious for some reason. Although I do sleep very lightly, I think the fan noise made me nervous that I wouldn’t be able to hear my son if he woke up moaning in the middle of the night.
Thanks for stopping by and following Mom to 2 Posh Lil Divas.
Following back now! I found your post very interesting – I am the EXACT opposite!
I need quiet to sleep – any lilttle noise disturbs me.
My husbands breathes heavy and I can’t stand it at night! It takes me forever to fall asleep listening to it. I have tried turning the tv on to drown him out thinking maybe it was just that annoying type of noise – NOPE! Can’t sleep with that on either!
Even the ticking of the clock makes me nuts in the still of the night! Maybe I’m the one with the problem, huh! lol!

Nope. Not weird at all. I have the same issue, and I take one with me if I’m staying the night somewhere. I even have a battery-operated camp fan for when there is no electricity (such as camping).
I get overly warm because I’m like a space heater, so the fan keeps me cool.
I have always slept with a fan on, even when I was little and luckily my Chris does so it’s always worked! Now little Babe has always slept with one too, the white noise is good for babies I read. As for the blow dryer, I saw that in a commercial! My BiL sleeps with a blow dryer turned on under the blanket with him all the time! He says it’s comforting but he has burned himself and caught the blanket on fire before and he doesn’t care!
You are definitely not along, we have to have the TV on in the bedroom. We always set the sleep timer though so it turns itself off once we are passed out. I can’t function in complete silence. There always has to be something. Our baby monitors have been through hell and back and make white noise sounds now so that is ALWAYS in the background.
I have to sleep with a noise machine on. I set mine to the “rain” setting (even though it mostly just sounds like white noise.) Before iPhones and white noise apps, whenever we traveled I would leave the bathroom exhaust fan on. If the power goes out and it gets all quiet I wake right up, thinking something is wrong.
The weird thing is that I can’t sleep with the TV or Radio on and when I’m home alone I like it QUIET. It drives me crazy that as soon as the hubby walks in the door he starts turning stuff on.

Hey! I had to do the opposite and I MUST sleep with ear plugs – they go wherever I go!

I’ve slept with a fan before. I have a ceiling fan that is almost ALWAYS on that I fall asleep too. BUT if the bathroom fan is on (I have a bathroom off the master bedrm, I can’t sleep.
Weird I know.
You are not alone.
Cute story.
At least you won’t be hurting yourself with the fan…
Hi there, giving you a follow back, thanks for stopping by…I I use the radio…drives my husband nuts! Good thing I have great hearing and he doesn’t…

You’re not alone. We sleep with a fan on (for noise) every night. Our girls have a fan in their room too for white noise. Both my husband and one of my daughters are extremely light sleepers and sleep is impossible for them without white noise to block out the standard night noises that occur.
I will sometimes open the bedroom window because hearing the outside noises helps me sleep better, esp. when it’s raining.
I can’t stand any noise at all! No light, no noise, no movement. I like death when I sleep.
1st off your blog name is awesome and second my husband needs the fan on to sleep. We have purchased so many in the past, mainly me because I wanted one that looked nice. No my husband had to get the turbo jet fan. I mean it sounds like a jet taking off and I have to suffer through it and fall asleep. I do, because I’ve been married 18 years so I’d better have gotten use to it by now!
