My mother is a full blown hypochondriac.  She has an innate ability to turn the simplest of illnesses into life-threatening diseases (in her head). Sure, she has some real health issues, but she also has some not so real ones.  So, when she starts babbling on about all the health issues she has (the real ones and the made up ones), I zone out.  I mean, trying to memorize the sequence of numbers in Pi is far more interesting than this weeks made up disease (in my head).   It’s because of her constant “self diagnoses”  over time, I have become somewhat desensitized towards people with imaginary illnesses.

I’ll almost always downplay an illness – especially when it comes to myself.  When I had a tummy bug recently, my answer was to take some Pepto and go to bed with a puke bucket by my side. My mother’s answer was to head to the ER immediately because she was convinced that my appendix had ruptured.

That said –  I’ve had this pain in the side of my neck for about a week.

It’s not my throat, it’s actually on the side of my neck.  So, I went to trusty old Wed MD to see if I could “self diagnose” myself.  Being the smart cookie that I am, I am 98% it’s a lymph node issue, so I searched for “Swollen Lymph Nodes” and my friends at Web MD told me that I could have anything from strep, to mono, to cancer to Lyme Disease (and many others, too).  Um, hello? That’s quite a range if you ask me and now I’m actually looking forward to seeing the doctor later today to see what the heck is wrong with me.

Even though I normally belittle hypochondriacs, I’m pretty sure I’m one of them.  And I sure as hell need to say off of Web MD.

  3. It’s that time of year, probably strep.. but better safe than sorry!

  4. Lol, my sister is one of those who has ALWAYS been easily swayed by the illnesses of others. When she she was a kid, she called my mom at work, bawling and freaking out …. She was convinced, after watching something on TV , she had PROSTATE cancer.

We will never let her live that down.

Hope your pain turns out to be something boring and easily treated.

  5. This is how I feel when I go to WebMD: http://cdn.memegenerator.net/instances/400x/8324672.jpg
I hope you feel better soon!

  6. How ironic, I am going to the Drs. in about 30 min! Jinx! (for physical) I have had neck issues too…I seem to always have an upper respiratory issues – I think they are related. I may need to see an eye, ear, nose, throat specialist.

Anyway, Wed. MD and those other site can make ya crazy! I know.

Now I have to make a laundry list of things I want to discuss, otherwise it will be wham bam see ya next year…..(I call it drive by health care!)

I hope you are feeling better!
