When we arrived in San Diego on Friday night/Saturday morning (sometime around midnight), we grabbed our rental car and went straight to the hotel to get some sleep. Midnight in California is 3 am in Massachusetts after all, and we were beyond tired.

I don’t remember what time we woke up on Saturday, but it was definitely an east coast wake-up, so we were up early. Chris and I had a feeling that something like that was going to happen, so we had already planned to keep our first day there low key. Since we were up so early and ready to go, we decided to head over and surprise Chris’s brother and nephew, at their house (my awesome sister in law was working that morning, so we had to wait a little longer to see her). Since they live all the way across the country, we don’t see them as much as we wish we did, so we were all excited to get over there that first morning and see them.

After my sister in law got home, we had some lunch (yay for my first time at Jack in the Box) and then the three boys got to spend some time at the playground. I was too busy catching up with my SIL to get any pictures of that…..do you believe that? Me not taking pictures? Words I never thought I’d say.

My nephew had a Tee Ball game that day, so we all went to watch him. Sadly,he wasn’t feeling well, so my SIL took him home to rest and the four of us grabbed Chris’s brother and went to yet another playground. After a while, we dropped Chris’s brother off at his place and headed back to our hotel. Once we got there, we ordered pizza for dinner (Papa John’s) and the boys went swimming.

We were a little surprised that it wasn’t as warm there as we thought it would be.  It was only around 60 degrees that first day and it was like that for most of the week.   The pool was freezing, so Chris and I didn’t want anything to do with it, but the boys are much, much braver and jumped right in.

The weather became a running joke between the four of us adults for most of the week.  My SIL and BIL joked that Chris and I brought the Boston cold with us because supposedly it is always over 70 and sunny there, not that we saw anything close to that until the last two days of our week there….

It was all good, though.  We had a blast and trust me, I have so much more to tell you!

  1. Oh sounds like you had a blast. And I am so done with the cooler temperatures. It is almost May and we have barely hit 60 here most days. But weather or not, glad he trip was a good one and a success 🙂

  2. They don’t even look cold, in fact, they look delighted. 🙂

  3. I don’t like cold pool either.. Kids for some reason don’t care.

  4. What a bummer the weather wasn’t it’s norm … that sucks! The boys are super brave! I hate cold pools!

  5. I hate cold pools also, I am with your husband and you 🙂 Sorry you didn’t have warmer weather when you went, our weather has been crazy also, 90 one day and 50 the next. I am so ready for summer!

  6. Kids definitely have way more tolerance for that kind of thing. I’m pretty sure the pool was all that mattered to me as a child when we traveled and I have ZERO recollection of it ever being cold, but surely it was most of the time!

  7. It still sounds like you guys did an awful lot for a low key day!

  8. It’s crazy that it wasn’t warmer! That must have been disappointing. But looks like the boys made the most of it and didn’t mind the cold pool!

  9. I would have so expected it to be hot and sunny! Oh well, at least the boys got some swim time in and it sounds like you all had fuN!

  10. Our pool was finally installed but it’s been in the 60’s here so we’re freezing but that didn’t stop my boys from jumping in. Thankfully it’ll be 80 tomorrow and the landscaping will be completed so I’ll be out there! I had my son join Tae Kwon Do by the way, you inspire me. He’s really doing well!

  11. Water was freeeeezing

  12. I love that your “low key” day sounds pretty jam packed!

  13. Isn’t that the way it always goes? You get somewhere you think is going to have nice weather and bam, it sucks the whole vacation. If I ever get to Hawaii, I am sure it will snow when I get there. lol

  14. Sounds like a great day was had! I would give anything for 60 degrees right now. I’m beginning to feel as though the Mother Nature is possessed by a polar demon.

  15. I always try and be rave when pools are cold but Really I just stand there dipping one or in an out. Well done boys! Have a lovely time! x

  16. Even I am not brave enough to swim that cold!

  17. Sounds like a great time, I am craving me some Papa Johns pizza, wish we had it here in Canada!

  18. They are very brave, brrr. I can’t wait for our pool to open. Sounds like a wonderful time!!

  19. Sounds fun! We’re from Iowa so we would have gone swimming too! =0)

  20. Sounds like you had an amazing first day. Can’t wait to hear about the rest. And yes I am shocked you did not take pictures.

  21. The first time I went to California I was certain the weather was going to be nice and balmy. Even in San Francisco. In March. Was I in for a wake up call. But you’d think in the San Diego area it’d be way nicer. The weather is just doing wacky things right now. Monday it was 84 here and tomorrow it’s only supposed to be in the 60s. I’m so glad you got to catch up with your family and had a great visit!

  22. Those smiles say it all! Children are oblivious to the cold! Glad to hear the weather cooperated for you towards the end of your stay!

  23. I’m with you … the pool would have been too cold for me too.

  24. Sound like a fun day!

  25. I can’t stand a cold pool either!

  26. LOL boys can never resist a pool! I so would have dipped a toe and said I’m good!

What a bummer on the weather.

  27. Looks like the boys had fun in the pool. You mentioned Jack in the Box and I’m sooo craving some. The closest is an hour away.
