On Sunday night I went into Boston with some friends to see The Package Tour – Boys II Men, 98 Degrees and Boston’s own New Kids on the Block.

I first saw NKOTB at the old Foxboro Stadium (the old stadium that my beloved New England Patriots played in before they built the snazzy new Gillette Stadium that they play in now) when I was in the ninth grade.  So, if you’re better at math than I am – we’re talking a little over 20 years ago.   Imagine being  a girl at the ripe old age of 14 getting to see her biggest crush…..let’s just say that at the time, it was pretty much one of the greatest nights of my life.

But some things never change.

Here is is 2013 and there were more girls there with crimped hair than should have been (for the record, that number should have been a big fat zero).  I understand that that NKOTB were big in the late 80’s/early 90’s, but that doesn’t mean that anyone needed to dress up like they were stuck in that time period.  You know what I mean?  Besides, who the hell even still has their crimper from 1989 anyways?

Oh, and there was this chick with a banana clip.  And again, I have to ask – who still has one of these in their house?

One of my favorite things of the night was seeing this guy (who was one in about ten guys in attendance) in a New Kids t-shirt.  He was seated in the row right in front of us, so we got to look at it all night long.  Seriously.

Once the show actually started, Boys II Men were the first act that played and they got the crowd going pretty good.  They were pretty big back in their day and everyone there knew every song they sang.

Then 98 Degrees came out and to say they were boring as hell is a complete understatement.  The entire crowd lost it’s mojo and it seemed like the majority of the people in the audience lost interest.  The girls next to us were playing candy crush during their entire set.  I think they should have opened the show because they were the least popular group of the three, but I’m sure they had their reasons for putting the groups in that order.

Finally, around 9 pm, the New Kids came on and played for about two hours.  They were awesome and Donnie Wahlberg has always been and still is “the cute one”.  The show was so good and because they are from Boston, I think that made the show that much better – especially when they came out in Red Sox jerseys during their finale.

Remember the guy in the New Kids t-shirt.  He was pretty loaded, but that didn’t stop him from singing along to all the songs, – even the love songs – and he knew every word. .. I kid you not.    He had been there with his wife/girlfriend and another couple.  The other couple ended up getting into some kind of a huge fight and the girl stormed off.  The New Kids t-shirt’s wife/girlfriend went off to console her, leaving the two men at the seats alone.

And this happened during the song I’ll Be Loving You Forever.  Yup.

All in all, it was a great show and did I mention how hot Donnie Wahlberg is?

  1. Those two guys are pathic. My crush is Britney Spears

  2. I would love to take my Daughter to a New Kids concert…. Sounds like you had a good time just looking around and seeing all the people. By the way…. I have a couple of banana clips in my bathroom. Haven’t worn them in years, but they are there…. just in case http://www.myjourneywithcandida.com/

  3. I always liked Donnie Wahlberg – I like him on the show Blue Bloods.

I have not been to a concert in like 20 years. Not sure if I would be up for it – lol

Looks like an interesting time 🙂

  4. Omg, so jealous and Joey McIntyre was all that and a bag of chips!!! 🙂 Totally loved him back in the day!!

  5. I think everyone I know was at that show and they all loved it! glad you had a good time 🙂

  6. How fun! I would have loved to have gone to one of their shows on this tour. I knew a lot of people that went and I loved seeing all their pictures on Facebook.

  7. Sounds like fun. I haven’t been to a concert in forever.

  8. I was there as well. I saw a whole bunch of women wearing the “Property of Joey” t-shirts. It cracked me up.

We were also joking how we thought it was weird BoyzIIMen played first, but then we decided it was so we could all go use the ladies room and get another round of drinks during that lame 98 Degrees set before the fun started.

  9. It’s a bromance!! Hahaha. I love your commentary. Annnnd I thought Joey was the cute one. 🙂

  10. I would have LOVED LOVED LOVED this concert! I always said if Boys II Men and Mariah Carey went on tour together it would be the best concert in the world! 🙂

  11. SO JEALOUS! I love me some Donnie Wahlberg too. I used to have VHS tapes of their recorded concerts, and in one of them Donnie was singing at the end of the stage with the camera pointing up at him with a great view of his crotch. His pants were ripped in the front and you could see his underwear- I spent endless hours re-watching that part just to try and get a glimpse of his wanker.

  12. Jordan Knight!!! Ahhh I still get butterflies! We went to the concert a few years back. It was so much fun and brought back so many memories.

  13. I had to look him up. He looks like his brother… imagine that, people related looking like one another. 🙂

Glad you went and had a good time. That’s hilarious about the guys in front of you. 🙂

  14. I am sooooo soooo sooo jealous! My bff and I have been talking about wanting to go to a NKOTB concert!

Best commentary of the day. I am cracking up! You do what I do and people watch, all the while coming up with snide remarks. I just don’t have the balls to post it on my blog lol.

The Knight brothers were IT back in the day lol. However, today I’ll take Donnie’s brother over any of them.

  15. I never got into any of them. It’s great that you had a good time. Crimping hair had a come back of like one year sometime recently. That’s funny about the guy in the New Kids on the Block T-Shirt. I could have predicted he is gay. One of my best friends that’s gay would totally go to a show like that.

  16. They are heading our way too.

I was too old by the time they came alone … I was still into rock about that time.

  17. That is a freaken riot! Those two guys together during that love song. priceless. I’m a Mark Wahlberg fan myself. Ever see Ted? lol

Glad you enjoyed the New Kids. 🙂

  18. LOVE how you caught pics of all the crazy people we ran into. Do you think that couple ever made up? If I was the friend I’d be furious that I had to leave the finale to go find the girlfriend that ran off. She was grouchy anyway! But the concert was amazing! Can’t wait for next time!

  19. Sounds like quite an experience! Too bad 98 degrees wasn’t exciting. I never really liked them much at all. It’s crazy that people were busting out the crimper and banana clips for the concert!

  20. I love that last pic! Priceless! Personally, I was in love with Jon Knight! *sigh*

  21. I am still totally in-love with Jordan Knight! Whenever he performed “Kiss” by Prince I nearly lost my mind! He is by far the hottest member of NKOTB! The show was great on May31st especially when Jordan motioned me over to the side of the stage and gave me a huge hug after Hangin’ Tough in his Red Sox jersey! A night I’ll never forget! My sister snapped a picture to commemorate the moment!

  22. Oh my gosh, I love it! Especially the crimped hair. I totally rocked that look when I was a kid. 🙂

  23. Waaaa! I love NKOTB, My bedroom wall was covered with their posters and BH 9210 ..they are old now but back then oh oh…

  24. I am sad to say that I think I still have a crimper in a box. And maybe a banana clip 🙂 It is also sad that I could see myself getting dressed up for a retro concert, my friends and I dressed in 80’s outfits for the Violent Femmes concert we went to in college. Love that you went to the concert!

  25. Well being gay explained it all! But good for them enjoying the night!!!

I wish I could have been there 🙁 But since well Robert decided on slicing his finger open I guess it was a good thing I didn’t buy tickets!

  26. I saw them last week as well. Was my 3rd time seeing them which means I have seen them every single time they have come to town. I also found 98 degrees SUPER BORING! Totally lost my concert buzz while they were on stage.

  27. I wasn’t into any of those bands back in the day… wick’d lame 😛

  28. Funny! I bet they thought they were pretty rad w/ the crimped hair too! LOL

  29. That last pic totally cracked me up! I was a fan of NKOTB when I was a teen but had no interest in the other two bands.
