With summer in full swing here in New England, families may want to consider a trip to Newport, RI. Amongst fabulous Gilded Age mansions, you will find that Newport is filled with many family-friendly attractions. My husband and I are not strangers to Newport, but we had never brought the kids along with us – until recently. Over Memorial Day weekend, the four of us had a lovely weekend in Newport and loved our stay at the Hotel Viking, which is located at One Bellevue Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island.
At Hotel Viking you’ll find that they offer valet parking (for a small fee), a delightful on-site restaurant, a full-service spa, a fitness center, two ballrooms, boardrooms, private meeting spaces, an indoor pool, the historic Newport Kay Chapel and 209 guest rooms. The room we stayed in room had two queen beds and the four of us were comfortable there for our two night stay. The room includes a gourmet honor basket filled with a variety of snacks , a mini fridge (stocked with an honor bar and also including items such as water and soda), a Flat screen LCD TV, Keurig coffee maker with a variety of coffees, an iron & ironing board, an in-room safe, hairdryer, and desk. There is free wi-fi available at Hotel Viking and you can get the password from the folks at the front desk.
Our weekend getaway was part of the “We are Family” package. The “We are Family” package was designed to encourage families to put the mobile devices down and turn up the fun – and that is exactly what we did while we were in Newport. The package, which starts at $189 per night ($409 in the summer), includes the following:
- A disposable camera for the kids
- A board game for the entire family to enjoy
- Complimentary breakfast for up to 2 children when dining with parent(s)
- Snacks for the kids
- Hotel Viking coloring books with unlimited crayons
- A 10% discount at the Hotel Viking spa
At Hotel Viking, there is no self parking, but there is 24 hour valet service. When you check in, you will be assigned a valet number and you just simply have to call for your car whenever you want to go out. You only need to give the valet staff 15 minutes notice to get your car and the valet staff will have your car waiting for you out in front of the hotel.
We loved staying at the Hotel Viking. It was full of class and charm. Not only was the staff was helpful and courteous, but the hotel itself is conveniently located near quite a few attractions.
The Hotel Viking is just a short walk from the Newport Mansions, in which you can tour and learn all about the elite families who spent their summers in their “cottages” during Newport’s Gilded Age. There are also several beaches close-by to the hotel. The Newport Art Museum and the Redwood Library, the oldest lending library in the country, are both walking distance from the hotel as well. The International Tennis Hall of Fame is located in Newport and it’s full of interactive fun for kids. Finally, the famed Cliff Walk, which is a 3.5 mile walking path with amazing views, is always a family favorite.
If you don’t feel like going out, the pool area is a fun way to spend some time with the family. They offer complimentary towels and comfortable seating in the pool area, so you can settle in for the day. You can even get poolside food and beverage service.
If you’re hungry, Hotel Viking’s award-winning restaurant, One Bellevue, offers three meals and Afternoon Tea daily, indoor and patio dining, as well as a bar and lounge. Top of Newport is Hotel Viking’s seasonal roof top lounge offering live entertainment and special events and menus.
