How To Work Out For Free

If you’re a regular around here, you already know that I train in Krav Maga.  I’ve spent this summer training extra hard and going through the black belt testing process, which takes a total of three months.  At my dojo, they do black belt testing twice a year – once in the summer and once in the winter. I started the process back in June when I made it through the qualification round.  Once someone has passed the qualification test, they can move on to the three phases of testing.

There are three adults going through testing this cycle and we all passed our phase one test back on August 1st.  This past Saturday we had our phase two (of three) black belt test and I’m happy to say that all three of us passed!  Yay!

snapple phase 2

It was a tough day.  Really tough.  The three of us did drill after drill  after drill as well as running our timed mile, doing 100 push ups, 100 sit ups and three 2 minute sparring rounds each.

As you might have guessed, I’ve had to train pretty hard this past summer to get ready for the testing process.  Until I went through phase one testing, I really had no idea just how much my body was going to go through. As soon as phase one was under my belt and I had a better idea of what to expect during my next two tests, I kicked my training into high gear.  With the kids home, I didn’t have much free time to make it to the gym to work on strength training, etc.   Sure, I went to Krav class 3 or 4 times a week, but because each phase of testing is approximately four hours (yes, four hours) long, I really wanted to figure out a way to build up my stamina.

So I had to get a little creative.  I put on my thinking cap and started coming up with ways that I could sneak in workouts at home – for free.

Walk-Walk-Walk

If you’re not huge on running and want to avoid the gym, then walk. One of the best parts of walking is that you can bring the kids along with you. You can walk short distances or long distances and there’s no limit to how long you can walk. You may need to do some adjusting when the weather gets colder, but walking in the cold isn’t so bad either.

YouTube Videos

Have you discovered the land that is YouTube? There are so many different videos to help you work out for free. There are all different types of workout videos available on YouTube as well, everything from yoga, to walking, to Chalene Johnson. For those of you who are pregnant, even you can get an awesome workout through YouTube because of the endless amount of tutorials available.

Start an At-Home Gym

The only thing that may cost money about an at-home gym is finding equipment that you can use. Honestly, you don’t need anything fancy to work out at home. A few weights, jump rope, and a mat and there are tons of things you can do to get “fit” right at home.

I also get in some extra training at the dojo when I can!

Chase Your Kids

Okay, you may laugh at this one, but your kids are the perfect way to get into shape for free. Have you ever seen your kids move around? They know how to stay in shape and all you need to do is follow their lead. Playing ball, running around, soccer, baseball, or just playing outside in the grass with them can help you get into shape quickly!

Being healthy is not just about working out, though.  You have to eat right in addition to exercising.  A few simple changes can really make all the difference.  Living better is easy when you eat fresh foods with natural ingredients and have some healthy beverage options to choose from.

Walmart makes it pretty easy to locate those healthy beverages – they’re easy to find right in the juice aisle.  I grabbed some Snapple Diet Peach preferred, along with some Vita Coco Pure and Neuro Sonic – Energy Refreshed.

Walmart juice

One of the black belts who went through the testing process during the last cycle told me that coconut water helped her get through the grueling tests.  Actually now that I think of it, grueling isn’t even a strong enough of a word to describe what the three of us went though that day.  I brought some with me to my test last Saturday and I definitely think it helped keep me hydrated and energized.

snapple drinks

Phase three is September 26th and I will be training extra hard over the next three weeks to get ready for it.  Bring it on!

You can enter to win a $50 Walmart gift card AND a $150 fitness tracker to get you on your way to a healthier lifestyle!

YES chasing and playing with our kids is a great way to build in some extra fitness time and enjoy quality time with our loved ones… And what better way to teach them that fitness is a lifestyle that seeps into everything that we do!! Great giveaway too 🙂

  76. You are amazing Robin. I would have passed out after attempting to do those exercises for the test. I realize that I would have to start slowly and work my way up.

I walked during my lunch hour a few years ago and it really did make a difference. I just did 20 – 25 minutes I liked doing it that way, it was idle time that u choose not to waste.

  77. These are great tips!, it is perfect for me i have to kids so i wont be able go to the gym and I’ve been looking what perfect work out from home. Love this idea.

  95. Congrats on passing. These are great tips you’ve shared. I haven’t tried the diet Snapple. I will look for this next time.

  96. Thank you for this, Robin. I have recently started a plan to get healthy and the exercise portion of it is difficult for me. We also live way out in the boonies where the nearest gym of any kind is 30 minutes away. Add the gasoline cost to the membership cost and working out easily becomes an expensive proposition.

  97. Watching Youtube videos (especially yoga ones) is a GREAT way to work out (without having to spend a whole lot of money.) I am in LOVE with peach tea Snapple right now <3

  98. I NEED this in my life!!! I was looking at pictures of my arms the other day and (smh) they need some help. Thank you for this!

  99. I walk and I workout at home, too. If I don’t have time, I would still sneak in a few minutes of workout by running up and down our stairs for 5 minutes.

  100. Snapple is one of my favorite beverages. There are so many diet drinks on the market but Snapple’s do not taste diet to me.

  101. Great tips! People think it always takes a ton of money at a gym to workout, but you can even walk around your neighborhood for free!

  102. I love vita coco coconut water. I buy it by the case. I am the process of organizing a home gym in my new house.

  103. A lot of those I do. Just today Isaak and a friend ran off when we got to a park. I had to chase after them.

  104. GO YOU!! I am so proud of women who get active and kick butt like this! I took karate back in the day – like FAR back in the day but didn’t stick with it – I was too young and out of control lol I would love to start something like this! Oh and I am totally going to use your idea about YouTube videos! Thanks !!

  105. Wow, you really do stay fit. Black belt training! You are awesome! If I can’t get to the gym I find waking the kids to and from school at least helps on days that I have a time crunch. I hoping to run a 5k next year.

  106. These are great tips! I can’t add up how much money I’ve spent on gym memberships over the years (thousands – I’m sure.) I’m going to be looking for a lot more tips like this once I have my baby, that’s for sure.

  107. Awesome tips! I think too often things like pricey gym memberships have us thinking that we might not be able to work out, but you’ve definitely provided some great alternatives.

  108. Great tips! Besides cycling and hiking I use some free yoga videos online when I need them. Instead of paying for a class, I can get them free online!

  109. I am amazed by the videos I find on YouTube! You can find just about any workouts you wish there and the cost absolutely nothing.

  110. Great tips on keeping fit! I can always use new workout ideas! Thanks for sharing!

  111. Oh wow 100 pushups; I can barely manage one lol. I may be able to have hung in there for about half of the sit-ups. It seems like you have been training very hard and your hard work has been paying off. Thanks for sharing this advice with us today.

  112. Congrats Robin! That is so awesome. I’ve been wanting to get healthier and these are great tips.

  113. Congrats on passing all of your tests! I think all of those fitness drills would have had me struggling. I cannot believe the tests last for 4 hours – wow!

  114. This is awesome. Congratulations on moving to the next Phase. These are some great tips to inspire others to work out. Thanks for motivating.

  115. Chasing our kids is definitely a good exercise and it’s totally free. LOL. Congratulations on passing the three phases. And here’s wishing you the best of luck in your karate. 🙂

  116. Congrats on passing your first round and best of luck with round two!! I use you tube videos for working out at home all the time!!

  117. My husband and I both train at home. It works great for us! Congrats on your test!

  118. That is fantastic! However, I’m like one of the other commenters on here: I can’t even try to attempt to do 5 push-ups.

  119. What great ideas! Chasing your kids is such a great way to get yourself moving. We do try to go on walks, but it gets hard to do when it’s so freaking hot down here in Texas. We get out a lot more when the temperatures go back down.

  120. YouTube videos are a great idea for working out! Such an awesome idea and will allow for some great variety.

  121. Congrats on making it to Phase 2 of your Black-belt training .. it must be so exciting yet rewarding. I use Youtube for my Free workouts …I like the 5 minute work-outs .. they are all I can manage now ..lol

  123. These are some great tips! A gym membership is so expensive so finding ways to workout for free is awesome!

  124. I love to workout for free. We’ve been working on a 5k with my entire family and it’s going great. Sunday we go for our first 5k ever!

  125. Chasing the kids is a great workout for sure. Seems like I put on about 10 pounds after the kids got older. I am blaming it on them anyway. Haha

  126. You know what? I am feeling really inspired but what you have done. I really appreciate you giving the great suggestions about checking out YouTube videos. That is what my daughter did this summer. She is pretty shy but she would go downstairs and put it on the computer and worked out. So between you and her… I’ll have to start this fall.

  127. As much as I’d like to work out at home, I always find other distractions which is why I prefer the gym. But when I do miss a gym workout, I do yoga at home.

  128. Great tips! Staying healthy can really be done for free. For my case I like a mix of the outdoors and the indoors when it comes to exercising. 🙂 Lately, I don’t find the need for gym at all.

  129. You rock with the all the training my dear! I’m trying to do the gym and home .. but trying lol

  130. Love the suggestions, in fact I was starting to do a few of them before all my moving. But I’m now living in a place that is much cooler and looking forward to walks to the park every morning with my youngest where I know I’ll be running after him and once I get my stuff out of storage I can do Zumba again. 🙂 Congratulations on your accomplishment and good luck on that next test. 🙂

  131. Makes me want to get super motivated and stay fit. Some people want to be fit for the summer but I want to be fit so I can be fit past the summer!

  132. I LOVE Youtube for working out! You’re right, it’s such a great free resource!

  133. I walk a whole lot and I also work out at home. I used to think I needed a lot of equipment to work out but I know that I just need the desire to do it and I can do it without anything special.
