A Visit to Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in DC

Many of you know that my family recently visited Washington DC for the second year in a row.  Last year we found that a week in DC just wasn’t enough time to be able to see and do everything that we wanted to, so we took the kids back again this year over their April school vacation to we could see the stuff we missed last year. Madame Tussauds Washington, DC was high up on our list and I am so excited that we were able to squeeze in a visit this year.

**My family and I were provided complimentary admission to Madame Tussauds in exchange for an honest review.  All opinions here are strictly my own and were not influenced in any way**

Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in Washington DC is definitely not your typical museum.  I had been to the Madame Tussauds wax museums in Vegas and NYC sans kids, but I when I found out there was one in DC – I knew my boys would love it and I was dying to take them there.

What’s great about this museum is that it’s an interactive and very hands-on.  Not only are all 44 US presidents & some First Ladies on display, but there are sports figures, famous musicians, actors and newscasters there that visitors can touch, see, hear and take photos with. Yes, unlike many other museums, photos are highly encouraged at Madame Tussauds. And yes, you can touch the figures.  It’s truly amazing to be able to admire every perfectly-placed hair on each of the wax icon’s heads up close and personal.  A few of the exhibits even have props (jackets, helmets, etc)  for you to use in your selfies.

As I said, I have been to two other of Madame Tussaud’s museums, but this one has a definite Washington feel.  In addition to the 44 US presidents I mentioned, there is a chance to sit behind the desk in an exact replica of The Oval Office, join Lincoln in the presidential box at Ford’s Theater and stand next to Martin Luther King Jr. as he recites his “I Have a Dream” speech.

IMG_9583

The museum is set up so that you see all of the presidents first and historical figures first.  As you walk along, you will come to the celebrity/sports/newscaster section and end up in the gift shop.  There is even a figure of Madame Tussaud herself. Each figure also has a small plaque with information about the person and there is also a room as you’re walking through where you learn about how the wax figures are made. It’s amazing to see just how much work, thought, and time goes into making each wax figure.

IMG_9595

It’s kind of eerie how realistic some of the figures are and what’s more, a lot of people are either much taller or much shorter in real life than I realized. Thomas Jefferson was wicked tall, but like me, Beyonce is super short.

IMG_9593

Remember that I mentioned the Oval Office replica?  That’s at the very end of the museum along with Mr & Mrs Obama.  It’s the room right before the gift shop and if you want a picture taken with them, you need to wait in line. They have a photographer there to take professional photos, but don’t worry – they will take them with your phone or camera, too.  You can purchase your photos in the gift shop or from home using the ticket stub they give you.

IMG_9594

The museum is open from 10 am – 6 pm, daily, but hours subject to change so be sure to check with them before you visit. There are different combo tickets available and you can find the one that’s best for you and your family here.

Madame Tussaud’s Washington DC is located at 1001 F Street, NW right in the Penn Quarter (near the Spy Museum and Newseum). There is parking available in the city, but it can be pricey.  If you are taking the Metro like my family did, Madame Tussauds is located between the Metro Center and Gallery Place stops.

Madame Tussauds is fun for all ages and we really enjoyed our visit there.
