Summer is coming up quick (yay) and for me and so many others, summer means heading to the beach. I can practically smell the beach air already……

When I go to the beach I stay for the whole day and what better way to pass the time than to read while I’m there. Often times I can bang out an entire book in one day and I usually start planning my summer reading list around this time every year. My tastes vary, so there are many genres of books on my list each year, but sometimes I just want to immerse myself in book where I can just escape and block out the rest of the world.  When I want that escape, there’s nothing better than a romance novel.

5 Reasons to Read a Romance Novel This Summer

1. They’re Steamy
Get your mind out of the gutter – in romance novels sex is a healthy activity that is enjoyed by two consenting adults who usually end up falling in love by the end of the book. Some of the scenes in the books are quite steamy, so if you’re at the beach and those parts of the books make you blush – people will just think you have a sunburn.  Plus who knows, these types of books can inspire new things in your own sex life…..

2. Happily Ever After
When reading romance novels, you can completely unwind and get lost in them knowing that the end of the book will not leave you hanging and frustrated. Cliffhangers STINK and it’s pretty much a guarantee that all the loose ends will be tied up by the end of a romance novel. Besides, who doesn’t like to read about heroic men sweeping women off their feet every once in a while. It’s good stuff.

3. Escape From Everyday Life
We all have a million and a half things to do every single day. I get it, I am a busy mom, too – adulting is not easy.  Whatever’s happening in your life, when you pick up a romance novel, you know you will get a happily ever after.  Guaranteed.

4. There is Something For Everyone
Love vikings? There is a book for you. Like books with a paranormal twist? There is a book for you, too. Maybe you’re into historical fiction? Guess what? There are plenty of books to choose from. The thing I love about romance novels is that there are books available featuring characters of every sexual orientation, skin color and body type, so what ever you’re in to – there is something for you.

There aren’t any Bond girls in romance novels – women take the forefront (as they should). In romance novels there is a heroine and a hero, who are both equals in the book. Each character has depth and emotion and as a woman, I think that romance novels completely rock it when it comes to female characters – the heroine’s story is the story.

In Law and Disorder by Heather Graham, the heroine Kody Cameron is a complete badass. She had been kidnapped by some ex-con’s looking to find a stash of treasure hidden in her family’s mansion in the Everglades years earlier by mobsters. She was held at gunpoint and kept her cool the entire time. She ends up falling for one of her captors, Nick, who is an undercover FBI agent – only she had met him before and he struggled to keep his identity secret so that his cover wouldn’t be blown. Their cat and mouse act was fun to read and I loved watching their relationship develop. I had a hard time putting this book down once I started it. There is some violence in this book, but no graphic sex.  I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a romantic suspense book.

In Captive of the Viking by Juliet Landon, Viking Aric captures his enemies daughter, Fearn, to be his slave, but she ends up being much more to him than just a slave. Throughout their journey back to his homeland, she starts to see him in a new light. Their relationship is highly charged and and lust for each other turns into lasting love. If you enjoy medieval stories, this book is for you.
