When I was growing up, lacrosse was an almost unheard of sport. Over the last 20-ish years, it’s really picked up steam and now there are nine professional teams that play for a Major League Lacrosse here in the US. One of those nine teams are based right here in Boston! The Boston Cannons have been a part of Major League Lacrosse since 2001 and play right at Harvard Stadium in Boston.

I had the chance to go to a Boston Cannons game with my family recently and we thoroughly enjoyed it.  In fact, my oldest son, who is 12, is considering joining a team after seeing a live game. The thing is, it was more than just a lacrosse game – it was an experience. Here are some of the things that made going to the game more than just a game.

Boston Cannons Fan Zone

Get there early and experience the Boston Cannons Fan Zone. The Fan Zone is open at every Cannons home game two hours prior to the start of the game and remains open through the first quarter. At the Fan Zone you will find things like music, ping-pong tables, RCN Ice Cream Truck, FlingGolf, the Bud Light Build-A-Bar, and more! It has something for fans of all ages. Continue reading »

new-food-options-at-the-td-garden-in-boston

Picture this:  You & your family (or friends) head out for a night at the Bruins, Celtics or other event at the TD Garden in Boston.  You fight the traffic getting into Boston, find parking, walk from where ever you parked to the arena, get through security and suddenly you’re starving. It happens every time, right?

Whenever I head into the Garden, the first thing I usually do is make a quick detour to the closest restroom, find my seats and then scout out the food options. What I have always loved about the TD Garden is that they have so many great food choices.

Concessions and food options include:

  • Big Bad Burger: Signature juicy burgers drizzled with Gooey Sauce; optional double, triple or quadruple patties.
  • Boston Common: Local fresh seafood menu including fried clams, lobster roll, lobster bisque and clam chowder.
  • Garden Grill: Classic Boston sandwich menu that includes shaved steak roll with house made cheese sauce and fan favorite grilled chicken sandwich.
  • The North End Butcher: Kayem meats including an Italian sausage with peppers and onions and jumbo all-beef gourmet hot dogs.

ghost-ship-harbor

It’s that time of year again!  Halloween time that is.  One of my favorite things about Halloween season is going to haunted houses. There is just something about screaming my guts out as some creep jumps out at me to get my adrenaline rushing. Lucky for me, there are lots of places like that here in New England and one of the ones I can’t wait to get to this year is Ghost Ship Harbor aboard the USS Salem in Quincy. As the name states, it’s a ship and it’s actually haunted in real life, but each year in October it transforms into an immersive scarefest.

ghost-ship-harbor1

With more than 60,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor terror experiences, Ghost Ship Harbor will horrify and petrify fans with interactive and twisted experiences. Ghost Ship Harbor is based on the premise that a plague has taken over and to ensure survival, civilians must visit the USS Salem before the ship departs on October 31.  It was designed by Boston-Based Immersive Productions and Jason Egan, creator of Fright Dome Las Vegas. the-2016-jack-olantern-spectacular-at-roger-williams-park-zoo1

If you are local to New England, surely you’ve been to – or at least heard of the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular at Roger Williams Park Zoo.  It’s an annual tradition for our family to attend as well as thousands of others each year. If you’ve never been, you’re missing out because it’s really something to see.  The Jack O’Lantern Spectacular is a nighttime display of 5,000 illuminated jack-o-lanterns all along the zoo’s beautiful Wetlands Trail, with well over 100 of the pumpkins carved into veritable works of art. There’s something magical about so many illuminated jack o’lanterns on display as you walk along the trail. This year The Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular is presented by Citizens Bank and it runs from October 6 – November 6, 2016.

Last week I had a chance to preview the Jack O’Lantern Spectacular before it opened to the public and not only that, I was able to go behind the scenes and see some of the action.  I saw the area where the pumpkins are carved and learned how they store the completed jack o’lanterns in a temperature controlled box truck until they are ready to be put on display. BMG logo

Can you  believe that Blue Man Group is celebrating their 25th anniversary this year? I’ve seen the show a few times over the years and it’s one of those things you need to experience for yourself.  It’s so hard to explain what the show is all about unless you actually go see it with your own eyes, but I’ll try:

Blue Man Group is comedy, theater, rock concert and dance party all rolled into one. This wildly popular phenomenon delivers an outrageous, multi-sensory experience you’ll never forget. Don’t miss the show that has captivated 35 million people worldwide. Blue Man Group – enemy of monotony, remedy for boredom, promoter of overjoy and elation!

For their 25th, they embarked on a World Tour in March, launched their third album, THREE, in April and will release their first ever book, Blue Man World, in October.

BMG world book

Blue Man World is a graphically rich, textually dynamic, cheekily clever deep dive into the world of the Blue Men, as well as a hilarious cultural satire. Including archival photographs, specially commissioned artwork, infographics, and interviews with Blue Man experts (both real and potentially not real), it answers all the burning questions including: Who are these Blue Men? Where do they come from? Why are there only three of them? What drives their curiosity? What do they hope to accomplish? Continue reading »

The Great Escape Room Providence

If you are a regular around here, you already know that I am always on the go & I am always on the hunt for new ways to keep my family – especially the boys, entertained.  Recently the four of us had a chance to check out The Great Escape Room in Providence, RI and not to give too much away right off the bat, we LOVED it.

You’ve probably noticed that escape rooms seem to be popping up more and more & I have been curious for a while now to check one out to see what all the buzz is about. I have never done anything like this before, so I honestly had no idea what to expect. Let me just say that our experience at the Great Escape Room far exceeded my expectations.

Great Escape Room7

Here’s a little background: “The Great Escape Room is a real-life room escape game based on the popular computer and mobile phone escape games. Escape games are the newest craze sweeping the nation – a fun, team-building, brain-busting experience! After entering a room with your team, the door is locked behind you. 60 minutes are on the clock! You must work together in order to find clues and solve puzzles that will lead you to your escape. It is part scavenger hunt and part puzzle game. Only about 20% of groups are able to meet the challenge and escape in time!” Continue reading »

Taking the Hahvahd Tour

I’m a Boston girl.  Always have been and always will be. It’s no secret that I love living here and whenever I meet someone who is not from around here, as soon as they find out where I’m from I inevitably get asked the same question: “Can you say park the car in the Harvard yard”?  Seriously – it happens every single time.  It fun to play along, though, because we know how cool our accent is around here and we love to bust out the Boston whenever we can!

For the record, there are no “R’s in that statement whatsoever.  It’s paaaahk thuh caaaaaah in the Haaaahvid yaaaaad.

Even though there are no R’s to be found, there is tons of IQ at Harvard and my husband Chris and I learned all about it when we took the Hahvahd Tour last weekend.

Bookstore Scavenger Hunt

Today is a special day – it’s Chris’s 41st birthday!  Happy Birthday, Chris.

Since we had some alone time yesterday, I took him to do something fun in celebration of his birthday weekend. He loves to read & spend time at bookstores, so we went on a bookstore scavenger hunt.

rueyear bookstore scavenger hunt

It wasn’t as easy as it sounds, but it was a blast.  Oddly enough, we ran into each other after about an hour and 15 minutes & each of us only had one thing left to find – so it was neck in neck.  The good thing about something like this is that the answers are pretty subjective. Not only did we both end up winning since we finished at the same time, but there was one answer that neither of us could get (finding a book with exactly 394 pages. He found one with 395 and I found one with 393 – so we were both pretty darn close) – so we both had all the “right” answers.

If you want to head out on a bookstore scavenger hunt, too, just print these four pages out and you’ll have everything you need for a fun day with your main squeeze. Continue reading »

Oktoberfest, the yearly German fall festival that draws in more than six million people, celebrates everyone’s favorite things: food, beer, and merrymaking. Although the official Oktoberfest celebration takes place in Munich, Bavaria, there are Oktoberfest celebrations held all over the world. Foxwoods® Resort Casino, the Northeast’s premier resort destination, is joining the party with month-long food and beverage offerings through October 31st.

Disclosure: I was invited to attend a wonderful Oktoberfest themed press event at Foxwoods® Resort Casino, but as always, all opinions expressed here are strictly my own and were not influenced in any way.

Approximately a dozen bloggers and their plus ones met at Cedars Lounge, where we all started our evening with Oktoberfest beer tasting and social.

My husband, Christian, and I have been to Mystic, CT numerous times.  In fact, you have probably seen me write about our trips down there a few times in the last year alone. We only live about an hour and fifteen minutes away, so while it’s still relatively close to where we live, it’s just far enough that it makes for a perfect weekend getaway spot.

Last weekend we found ourselves in Mystic yet again and had a chance to go on the Seaside Shadows Haunted Tour one of the nights. If you are a regular around here, you know that I am obsessed with love walking ghost tours.  They combine two of my favorite things in one – history and paranormal activity.  Seriously, as far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t get much better than that.

**Disclosure:  My husband and I received complimentary tickets to this tour thanks to my friends at Mystic Country.  All opinions expressed here are strictly my own and were not influenced in any way!

As I said, I have been in Mystic many times, but I had no idea that this community had such a dark past.  I loved hearing the spooky stories as we strolled through downtown Mystic by lantern light.

The tour met on the sidewalk by the Mystic River Park (near the drawbridge). Once the tour started at 7 pm, we all headed over to the Park’s boardwalk to start the tour.  It was there that the tour guide, Courtney McInvale Reardon, told us a little bit about herself.  In addition to being a Connecticut native herself, she is a sensitive and has been connecting with the other side for many years.  She also told us about her experiences growing up in a haunted house which was actually investigated by the famous Warren family. Ghosts & Gravestones Trolley Tour Savannah

My husband, Christian, and I recently got to spend a few days in Savannah, GA.  Over the years we’ve both heard the stories about how Savannah is America’s most haunted city, so we were dying to explore some of the haunted history of the charming southern city during our first visit there.

*Disclosure:  My husband and I received complimentary admission to the trolley tour in exchange for this post about our experience.  All opinions expressed here are strictly my own and were not influenced in any way.

For anyone that’s ever been to the historic part of Savannah, the first thing you’ll probably notice is that there are ghost tours everywhere you look.  While we were down there, someone told us that there were over 35 different tours to choose from.  With that many options, how do you decide which one to do?  For me, the decision was easy – I went with what I knew – the Ghosts & Gravestones Trolley Tour.  Last year for my birthday, Chris took me on the Ghosts & Gravestones Tour here in Boston and we loved it, so when we saw that the same company had tours in Savannah, it was a no-brainer for us.

Let’s just say that we were very happy with our decision. Continue reading »

Everything You Need for a Date Night at the Drive-In

We have a list of things we do every single summer.  They’re kind of like traditions in our family and we always make sure we do them at least once every summer. One of the things on our list is going to the drive-in.  It’s such a fun way to watch a movie and it’s always a hit with the husband and kids.   When you’re planning a night at the drive-in, there are some things you will definitley need to bring with you to make your night a success. Whether you’re going on a date night with your hubby (or wife) or your whole family is in tow, don’t forget these essentials.

If you have ever heard of a “Cirque” show, you probably have an idea of what to expect during a show – especially if you watch America’s Got Talent.  But did you know that there are different “Cirque” groups?  Up until last week, I had no idea.  We’ve all heard of Cirque du Soleil, but for the last 20 years, Cirque Éloize has been taking people by storm in more than 440 cities around the world.

Cirque Éloize was founded in Montreal in 1993, over a decade after Cirque du Soleil and for the month of August, Cirque Éloize’s iD is playing at the Fox Theater at Foxwoods.

Cirque Éloize’s iD blends old-school acrobatics with street dance and hip hop. I got a chance to see the show last week and trust me, it’s not like any circus you’ve ever seen before.

But before I tell you what I thought of the show, I wanted to share a little bit about a fun opportunity I had the afternoon before the show.

IMG_8788

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have followed along with the fun last Friday when I joined several other local bloggers for an exclusive behind-the-scenes blogger workshop with some of the cast members of Cirque Éloize’s iD.

Pretty cool, right?

As soon as I entered the Fox Theater at Foxwoods,  I couldn’t help but notice the impressive set.  As you can see, it’s massive and as I would find out a little while later, it’s even more complex than it looks.  The set features about 10 doors & windows that the performers use throughout the show to come & go through – plus a quite a few moving parts. Recently my husband, Chris, and I had an oh-so-special night. You know what I’m talking about – the kind that doesn’t involve kids. That’s right, we got to go out on a date.  Alone. Without children.  Since he and I both love a good mystery, we decided to go to a murder mystery dinner show.   As far as I’m concerned, you can never go wrong with a little mystery, intrigue, and murder.

**Disclosure:  I was provided complimentary tickets to the show thanks to Vimbly in order to facilitate this post.  All opinions expressed here are strictly my own and were not influenced in any way.

We ended up choosing to go see the Crime and Pun-ishment Interactive Dinner, which is put on by The Murder Mystery Company at the Sons of Italy in Quincy, MA.

Here is the description of the show:

Things take a turn for the gutter at Mafia Don Lou Zar’s juice joint when someone is put on ice! The crowd is chock full of potential suspects. Jealous, jilted lovers, a rival Mafioso, and a pair of undercover feds make an appearance at this speakeasy and not a single person is muttering a word! Help find out who’s on the level and who’s on the lam by trading clues with your guests, gathering information, and solving the crime before the murderer hotfoots it out of there! Continue reading »

“Cocktails, brews, wine and appetizers with a view”

For great food and atmosphere, the Skiff Bar in Newport, RI is the place to be.  Located inside the Newport Marriott, the Skiff Bar is quickly becoming one of Newport’s most popular hangouts.

Skiff Bar Bar

Many of you know that my husband and I are frequent visitors to Newport.  We’re there several times a month (or more) and really enjoy spending time in the seaside community. We love everything about Newport. The beaches, the history, the shopping, and especially the food.

From what I gather (and I am only speaking from my own personal experience here), Newport seems to have a reputation as a pricey and sometimes even an exclusive place to eat out.  Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of casual restaurants throughout the city, but they seem to be a little harder to come by.

Enter the Skiff Bar.

Small Disclosure

Trust me when I tell you that I love getting presents just as much as the next girl. Seriously. I get all giddy when someone gives me a gift and since it just so happens that my birthday is coming up next week, I am hoping to get a little giddy (wink, wink).  Especially since it’s not just any birthday – it’s one of those milestone birthdays.  That’s right, I will be 29.  Again.

Sometimes, though, you really just want to give someone a gift that will blow them away. You know, give them something that is truly memorable and that they will talk about for years to come!

Cue

Have you heard of them?  If not, here’s the skinny. Cloud 9 Living is the US leader in experience gifts, offering over 1,900 unique experiential gifts for men, women & couples in 51 regions. They have partnered with over 600 “Best in Class” experience providers who take pride in ensuring that every gift recipient enjoys a memorable experience.  I love the idea of gifting someone with an experience, don’t you?

With experiences ranging from thrilling and adventurous to relaxing and cultural, they really do have something for every taste and every budget.  You can choose from things like hot air balloon rides, racecar driving, helicopter tours, spa packages, food tours, golfing with a pro, dinner cruises and so much more.

I had the chance to choose an experience from Cloud 9 Living recently and I am excited to tell you about it.

On their website you can narrow your search down by gifts for her, gifts for him, the experience type or the most popular.  Since I really had no idea where to start or what I was looking for, I just did a search for all experiences in my area (Boston) and the site pulled up everything that was available to me.

There were so many cool things (I mean seriously cool) offered locally to me.  A few things caught my eye right away, and I was able to narrow it down pretty quickly to 3 or 4 things that I really wanted to do.  It was between a couples massage (for me and Chris of course), a flying lesson (something I have always wanted to do), a helicopter tour of Boston and a romantic dinner for two in which a seasoned chef comes into your home for a night and cooks dinner for you in the comfort of your own home.

Can you guess which one I chose?  Stay tuned…… Continue reading »

North End Wine Tour

**Disclosure: My husband and I were recently invited by City Wine Tours to join them on a complimentary North End Wine Tour.  All opinions expressed here are strictly my own and were not influenced in any way*

One of my favorite places in the world to be is the North End of Boston.  Coming from a large Italian family myself, I have so many fond memories of taking the train into the city with my Grandparents to get fresh ingredients to cook with.  As I got older, I truly enjoy the amazing tastes that I find in the North End.  Aside from my mother’s cooking, the North End has the best Italian food around. And seriously, what is a great meal without a nice glass of wine (or three) to accompany it?

Other than knowing I like it, admittedly, I am not much of a wine connoisseur.  That’s why I was really excited when I recently had a chance to go on a North End Wine Tour through City Wine Tours.

Wine tour you ask?  Now that I have piqued your curiosity, let me tell you more.

During each wine tour, you will be met by an extremely knowledgeable wine ambassador, who will take you around to three hot spots (in my case it was the North End).  At each stop, you will get a chance to sample two wines (six in total) and try several food pairings at a reserved table – with wait staff standing by, ready to serve!  What’s even better is that each tour is limited to 12 guests, so it’s like your own private wine tasting!

Each North End Wine Tour begins at Aragosta at the Fairmont Battery Wharf, which is right along the waterfront.  The views there were absolutely gorgeous. Continue reading »
