If you are local to New England, surely you’ve been to – or at least heard of the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular at Roger Williams Park Zoo.  It’s an annual tradition for our family to attend as well as thousands of others each year. If you’ve never been, you’re missing out because it’s really something to see.  The Jack O’Lantern Spectacular is a nighttime display of 5,000 illuminated jack-o-lanterns all along the zoo’s beautiful Wetlands Trail, with well over 100 of the pumpkins carved into veritable works of art. There’s something magical about so many illuminated jack o’lanterns on display as you walk along the trail. This year The Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular is presented by Citizens Bank and it runs from October 6 – November 6, 2016.

Last week I had a chance to preview the Jack O’Lantern Spectacular before it opened to the public and not only that, I was able to go behind the scenes and see some of the action.  I saw the area where the pumpkins are carved and learned how they store the completed jack o’lanterns in a temperature controlled box truck until they are ready to be put on display.

the-2016-jack-olantern-spectacular-at-roger-williams-park-zoo6

One of the interesting things that I learned was that they will go through over 30,000 pumpkins this season alone.  Each jack o’lantern that’s on display will need to be replaced 4 to 5 times each – depending on the weather conditions.

These guys were busy carving the pumpkins.

These guys were busy carving the pumpkins.

As in years past, this year the display will have a theme.  In the past I remember seeing a 50 states and even an alphabet theme.  This year, it’s American Treasures.

2016 Theme: American Treasures

The 2016 presentation titled “American Treasures,” will feature a celebration of our nation’s history and culture through the rich lens of commemorative postage stamps. Since the Postal Service began in the 1850’s, commemorative stamps represent key events, places and cultural icons in thousands of extraordinary works of art. Visitors to the Spectacular will experience these images in special scenery where they are transformed into intricate carvings on illuminated pumpkins.

Elsewhere on the trail will be scenes featuring Humanitarian Heroes, Endangered Species, Science Theater, and Backyard Garden. And of course, Halloween favorites will be back including the dazzling Laughing Tree with its hundreds of illuminated pumpkins and iconic laughing music.

If you’ve been to the Jack O’Lantern Spectacular in the past, you might remember how crowded it was on the weekends, so Roger Williams Zoo is doing something brand new this year – Weekend timed-entry tickets and they are only sold online! It’s part of an effort to improve the visitor experience on weekends, so they decided to shift to timed ticket entry for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Again, tickets for these nights will only be available for purchase online.  Tickets are non-refundable, and cannot be rescheduled.

the-2016-jack-olantern-spectacular-at-roger-williams-park-zoo3

Know before you go:
If you purchase a ticket in advance, be aware that it does not provide you express access to the pumpkin trail. On Value Nights (M-Th), those who purchased tickets in advance will enter through Gate 2, skipping the ticket purchase line, and entering the line heading toward the pumpkin trail. Prime Nights (Friday, Saturday & Sunday) will have timed ticket entry through the main admissions plaza.

Event Prices:

Value Nights (Mon. – Thurs.): $15 adults; $12 children (ages 2-12) – Sold at Zoo Admissions and Online. Enter any time between 5:30 and 10:30pm. The trail closes at 11pm.

Prime Nights (Fri. – Sun.): $18 adults; $15 children (ages 2-12) – Sold Online Only. Timed entry begins from 5:30 – 6:30pm, and ends with the 10:30 – 11:30pm timeslot. The trail closes at midnight.

Timed Entry tickets are non-refundable, and cannot be rescheduled.

Zoo entry Prime Nights (Fri. – Sun.): Timed entry begins from 5:30 – 6:30pm, and ends with the 10:30 – 11:30pm timeslot. The trail closes at midnight.

Timed Entry tickets are non-refundable, and cannot be rescheduled.

Please be aware that, while entry to the Zoo begins at 5:30pm, the pumpkin trail will not open until dusk to allow for optimal viewing of the jack-o-lanterns.

the-2016-jack-olantern-spectacular-at-roger-williams-park-zoo10

Please note: The Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular is open rain or shine, however, in cases of severe weather or weather-related technical difficulties we might close the event or end admission early. Please check their website, Facebook and Twitter pages for frequent updates.

One more thing to keep in mind: They are doing construction on Elmwood Avenue, so if you are heading to the Jack-O-Lantern from 95 South you might consider taking the Park Avenue exit (Exit 16) as an alternate route to mitigate traffic.  When I went the other night, I took exit 17 (the Elmwood Ave exit) and was able to get through, but they are down from two lanes to one, so it did take me an extra few minutes.  This is just something to keep in mind.

the-2016-jack-olantern-spectacular-at-roger-williams-park-zoo11

Parking at the zoo is free, and I always take a picture of where I parked in the parking lot before I walk away from my car so that I can find my car easily when I am ready to head home for the night.  I always recommend doing this to others because that episode of Seinfeld with them walking around the parking garage trying to find their car the whole time always pops in to my mind.

the-2016-jack-olantern-spectacular-at-roger-williams-park-zoo13

I am a big lover of all things Halloween and the Jack O’Lantern Spectacular is a great way for families to kick off the Halloween season.
