8 great grilling hacks

As summer is here, it’s time to dust off the outdoor grill and get busy.  My friends at Scotties asked me to share my favorite soft summer moments that make me slow down and savor this wonderful summer season.  Without a doubt, having cookouts with friends and family tops the list. I love hanging out with good company and enjoying some great food while I’m at it. You don’t have to be a gourmet “grillmeister” to enjoy grilling and produce an amazing summertime meal. Check out these 8 great grilling hacks to help you out.

Super clean. Although, not the most favorite part of the process, but a necessary one after each use. Keep your grill covered and then break out the grill brush and give it a good scrub so you have a great grilling surface all times.

To marinade or not marinade? Take a few extra minutes in the morning, and simply add a nice marinade or a brining liquid to your proteins. Then, save time when you get home and fire up the grill. Make sure to use a little cooking spray or olive oil over the grates to help prevent sticking. Marinades high in sugar, like some barbecue sauces, tend to burn and stick, so be careful.

One tool to do it all. You really only need one good long pair of tongs for all your grilling needs. Keep it handy and keep it clean in between uses and it’s all you’ll need.

Try wood chips. For a nice and smoky flavor, change up your routine and add mesquite wood chips to either your hot coals or in a wood chip box for your gas grill.

Veggies are great grillers. Don’t forget the veggies! Cut them in large chunks or out them on skewers to keep from falling through the grates. If you have a grilling basket, this works even better.

More flavor. A super way to add even more flavor to your food is to out a few bundles of fresh herbs right on the coals. If you are using a gas grill, simply add to the wood ship box for extra yumminess.

Save even more time. Go ahead and boil or bake your ribs and chicken even before pulling out the grill. This can save tons of grilling time and more eating time!


Close it up. Once your food is done, don’t forget to close the lid for a bit to smoke off any little leftover bits. Cleaning it up right away saves you the daunting task of all that work next time you use it.

  7. Thankfully, I don’t get summer allergies. They usually stop by the end of spring. I do LOVE some grilled veggies. I bought a pan at the $1 store that is awesome for putting veggies on to grill. Best $1 I ever spent!

  11. My husband is grill master supreme, and he uses all these tips. Usually he’ll grill with soaked wood chips AND some dried herbs to give it some amazing flavor.

  17. These are all great tips. We grill out most of the summer. It gets too hot in our house without air conditioning to use the stove, so grill it is!

I realized the other day that hubby was NOT cleaning the BBQ tools after each use because in his mindset the extreme high temperature of the grill would kill any bacteria, or anything else. eeeeewwwwww. *shudder* To say I scrubbed those things within an inch of their life is mild. Like, what was he thinking?!
