Spread the love

I admit it, I have a slight zombie obsession, so naturally when I heard there was an an interactive tactical live-action zombie experience right in Abington, MA, I was all over it. Interactive you say? Yes, interactive!  During the interactive experience you get to travel through a small city infested with zombies.  Don’t worry, you will have the help of a guide and you’ll get a shotgun to shoot with to ensure you survive.

There are two areas of the city to be cleared at Boston Zombie Apocalypse. Chem Zone 44 contains slower Zombies and is a shorter experience. If you are nervous at all or are accompanying young people (no one under 8 allowed), then Chem Zone 44 is for you.  Z-Swarm 617 is a longer battle through a larger more intense part of the city.  You can do one or both.

Here’s the thing.  I went last year and had a pretty bad experience.  It was very poorly organized and I ended up waiting outside for over two hours in the cold.  Once I was inside the building, it literally took less than five minutes to run through the experience and boom, we were done.  I left there last year feeling very disappointed that I waited for that long to get in and it was over in just a few minutes.

But guess what, Boston Zombie Apocalypse has new owners this year.  They really listened to all the feedback about people’s experiences last year and greatly improved things this year.  Instead of having to stand in an extremely long line to wait for tickets, they are selling a limited number of tickets by the half hour to the two different zombie fields. That will ensure that you will enter your sector in a timely fashion without having to wait.

Chris and I were there this past weekend and were so happy that the whole process was streamlined.  Our tickets were for 7:45 pm and we only had to arrive about 20 minutes early.  It was so much better this year, so if you were turned off by your experience there last year, trust me – it’s not like that this year.  Oh, and did I mention that they have a food truck there this year now, too.  Last year while we waited for over two hours everyone in line kept saying that snacks would have been nice while we were waiting.  See, the new owners listened!

Anyway, once it was our time to go in to the live action experience, we entered the building in a small group (about 8 people) and were met by a military guard who showed us how to use our shotguns and let us all have a practice shot at a target. Once we all got that, we met our guide who would be taking us through the city.  He led us through the field and we defended our territory by shooting the zombies that came at us alongside the rest of our team.

You must sign a waiver before entering, though.

The total experience will include your weapons training session, military guide instruction, defending yourself through the field, then the decontamination exit. The whole experience in Chem Zone 44 will take approximately 15 minutes and Z-Swarm 617 will take approximately 20 minutes.  Believe me, it’s an action-packed experience.

If you’re wondering, yes, the zombies can touch you (lightly, of course), but you may not touch them.

The chick in the picture with me above is my really good friend, Denise McDonuts (not her real name). She actually works at BZA doing some of the awesome makeup for the zombies.  If you recall, she is the one who did the makeup for our family Christmas cards last year.  She’s pretty awesome.

You have two options, Chem Zone 44 is $12 and Z-Swarm 617 is $20. Please Note: In person at our ticket booth Chem Zone 44 is $15 and Z-Swarm 617 is $25. Buying your tickets online is highly recommended.  First of all, it’s cheaper to get your tickets online, second of all, by buying your tickets online you get to go at the time you want to go and third of all, you won’t get all the way there and find out that they are sold out for the night.

Here’s their calendar, so you can plan accordingly:

If you’re a zombie lover, you’re not going to want to miss your chance to experience this.  I promise you won’t be disappointed.  BZA is a unique and fun experience for anyone (over the age of 8) who wants live-action, hands on adventure. If you’re a couple that’s considering getting engaged, you especially should to go check out Boston Zombie Apocalypse. You’re going to want to see how your potential life partner reacts when the real apocalypse comes, right, so this is a great test.

Another thing I loved was that Joan and Randy, the owners, are on hand and they love hearing feedback, good or bad, about your experience.  So if you go and you really like something, tell them – you’ll make their day.  If you go and totally hated something, tell them that, too, because they might change it.  They’re always looking for ways to improve, so don’t be shy if go and see them around.

Boston Zombie Apocalypse is located at 1437 Bedford Street (Route 18) in Abington, MA. GO!

Oh, and like them on Facebook, too!

**Disclosure:  Chris and I got to experience BZA at no charge in exchange for my honest review.  All opinions expressed here are strictly my own and were not influenced in any way**

  88. I love Denise’s t-shirt 🙂 You look great in all the pictures. I have seen a picture online about how people will go to Sams if zombies invade the Earth, and I was just joking with my husband because a wall fell off with the storm today at Sams, so we are not safe from zombies anymore LOL – It’s one of those “you had to be there” jokes.

    • Haha robin does look great in all pics! I wish I could look good! Haha and that is my “work” shirt. Basically I got latex on it a few haunts ago and it doesn’t wash out lol

  89. This is certainly interesting… I like zombies, but more so on TV! I wouldn’t like them touching me.

  102. I asked my husband if we could go and he said ok! Thanks for the review!!

  103. Whoa! I think I would have nightmares forever if I saw this or lived through it. Nope I’m definitely not into anything like this that’s for sure. My son would probably love this.

  104. Great review! I would never have considered checking out an Interactive Zombie experience (not sure why not- I love The Walking Dead)- but this sounds creepy fun! So cool that you are sharing this great business with others as well!

  105. While I like the idea of zombies, I am totally fine letting everyone else fight them for now.

  106. My hubs is such a zombie nut too. After he found The Walking Dead, it was all over!

  107. What an exciting adventure. I would enjoy being with a group of citizens whose task is to wipe out zombies in the city and survive. It sounds very organized and creative.

  108. I’m obsessed with zombies in the fact that I’m genuinely scared of them. (That’s the ONLY thing that gets to me.) I’m convinced that out of all of the spooky things, zombies are the most likely to ever become real.

  109. We don’t share a love of zombies. But glad you had a fabulous time!

  110. Haha Love it! What a great time you all had. Love the pictures!

  111. I need to make a road trip.

  112. This looks like so much fun! My Husband loves The Walking Dead and zombies in general so he’d be game haha

  119. Looks like you had some fun. I don’t do scary stuff. Any fake blood and I’m gone. lol

  120. My hubby would love this! He is already counting down the days until the walking dead comes back on! So cool!

  121. OMG this was an amazing experience. I don’t think I would have like the zombie touching me though. yuck.

  122. Oh my gosh, this looks like so much fun!

  123. Looks and sounds like a lot of fun. Wish I lived closer to Boston to go to it!

  124. lol… I’m not much into the zombie thing, but apparently I’m really good at putting on makeup for anyone wanting to be a zombie (well, any type of painting.) A couple years ago, several people from a local haunted house were featured in the area paper and on television… all of them were people I had painted. And it wasn’t the expensive stuff… we used a lot of thrift items and cheap makeup aside from cheap costume makeup.

  125. Wow!! That looks like a real zombie. I easily get scared and I will scream at the top of my lungs if I see one. LOL

  126. You guys look like you really had a lot of fun! I like watching zombies on TV but even if they aren’t real, I don’t like seeing them in front of me! lol!

  127. This sounds slightly horrifying and amazing! I once attended a challenge called “Trapped in a room with a zombie” in Ohio. Google it. You would love it. Ps. my group got out!!!

  128. This sounds like a blast! I so wish we had something fun & interactive like this where I lived!

  129. Oh how fun is this! Hubby and I always joke about preparing for the Zombie apocalypse.. Hehe

  130. You are a brave woman! Hell no would I take part in something like this haha. I would have nightmares for days. 🙂

  131. What a riot. I wouldn’t know what to do in a zombie zone… That bloodied man did it for me. Haha!

  132. My husband loves watching the Walking Dead so I’m sure he would love the experience. My girls enjoy haunted houses so they would love it too. Count me out though!

  133. There’s a zombie walk coming up here in Toronto … 1000s and 1000s of zombies will be walking to city hall. It’s very cool!

  134. This looks awesome. My husband would love this!

  135. I’m a scaredy cat of epic proportions and this would have scared me silly. I’m glad you had fun though. 🙂

  136. I think I am the only person not familiar with the “Zombies” I keep thinking I will watch a program on Netflix but just have not yet. Looks like you had fun!

  137. I so have to do this sometime. Love all the make up!
