My husband, Christian, and I got recently invited to check out a new show in Boston called “BABEL: An Evening of Mind Reading”. Sounds cool, right?  Well, it was cool. Actually, it was totally mind blowing. We love it when we watch America’s Got Talent and a mentalist comes on and it always ends the same way with the two of us: when the trick is over, we look at each other and say in unison, “how the h-e-double hockey sticks did they do that??”

BABEL is a 90-minute intimate evening of mind-reading with Boston’s premiere mentalist, Christopher Grace, at The Bostonian Boston in the financial district and we went to BABEL’s debut show last Friday. It’s a performance designed for sophisticated adults looking for a different type of entertainment and Christopher delivered on his promise.

BABEL is a 90-minute intimate evening of mind-reading with Boston’s premiere mentalist, Christopher Grace, at The Bostonian Boston in the financial district. It's a performance designed for sophisticated adults looking for a different type of entertainment.

Christopher completely confounded the entire audience on Friday with his seemingly impossible mind-reading abilities, acts of super memory, and actually entertaining rapid fire math skills. He was inside all of our heads and kept up laughing the whole time. Continue reading »

I don’t know about you, but my husband I are always looking for fun date night ideas. We are both foodies, so going out to eat makes us both very happy, but every now and then it’s fun to change things up. Last weekend we definitely leveled up our date night! We spent a super fun night at the Chef’s Demonstration Table at the Dan’l Webster Inn in Sandwich.

The Chef's Demonstration Table at the Dan'l Webster Inn is a unique entertainment experience. Enjoy a cooking lesson and a wonderful dinner all in one fun night out.

The evening was quite entertaining as about 23 of us watched Chef Steve Chausse and Pastry Chef Lydia Broderick prepare a 3 course meal from scratch. The menu included roasted Stuffed Artichoke Tartlet, Winter Flounder Francaise with a beurre blanc sauce and a Ricotta Cheesecake with an almond crust for dessert. The two chefs made all three dishes from scratch all while providing tips on which tools and materials are best to use and lots of other practical tips that we will be able to use at home. I am a child of the 80’s and I am ok admitting that I spent an entire summer watching and re-watching the movie Annie.  On VHS. Ok, maybe I stopped watching to eat and go outside occasionally, but I think it’s pretty safe to say that I watched it at least 500 times that summer. I had the story line down pat and knew every word to every song.  I even went out trick or treating as Annie that year (which reminds me that I need to go through some old photos and dig that one out). I know that the movie has been remade a few times since the one in the 80’s that I loved so much, but I am loyal to the version I watched so many times that summer.

So now you know that I am a self-proclaimed expert on all things Annie, imagine how giddy I was when I got invited to see the live musical at the Boch Center (Wang Theater) in Boston last week.

Cirque Dreams Holidaze is playing at the Citi Shubert Theatre in Boston through December 11!  There are only six performances of Holidaze in Boston before they move on to their next destination and this is not a show you want to miss if you’re in town. I saw their first Boston performance last night and was completely blown away.

Can you  believe that Blue Man Group is celebrating their 25th anniversary this year? I’ve seen the show a few times over the years and it’s one of those things you need to experience for yourself.  It’s so hard to explain what the show is all about unless you actually go see it with your own eyes, but I’ll try:

Blue Man Group is comedy, theater, rock concert and dance party all rolled into one. This wildly popular phenomenon delivers an outrageous, multi-sensory experience you’ll never forget. Don’t miss the show that has captivated 35 million people worldwide. Blue Man Group – enemy of monotony, remedy for boredom, promoter of overjoy and elation!

For their 25th, they embarked on a World Tour in March, launched their third album, THREE, in April and will release their first ever book, Blue Man World, in October.

BMG world book

Blue Man World is a graphically rich, textually dynamic, cheekily clever deep dive into the world of the Blue Men, as well as a hilarious cultural satire. Including archival photographs, specially commissioned artwork, infographics, and interviews with Blue Man experts (both real and potentially not real), it answers all the burning questions including: Who are these Blue Men? Where do they come from? Why are there only three of them? What drives their curiosity? What do they hope to accomplish? Continue reading »

Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey LEGENDS

I recently had the chance to take my family to the circus and it was the first time I had been to see it in about 30 years.  The last time I saw a Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey production was with my parents, brother and sister in Boston.  My brother was really little at the time (maybe 4 or 5) and at some point during the show a clown was shot out of a cannon.  The loud noise sent my poor little brother in to hysterics so badly, that we all actually ended up having to leave the show.  He just wouldn’t calm down until we left. But such is life, right?

Anyhow, when I found out that Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey LEGENDS was coming to the TD Garden in Boston, I was excited to take my kids.  I just knew that they would love the show and I was right.

If you have ever heard of a “Cirque” show, you probably have an idea of what to expect during a show – especially if you watch America’s Got Talent.  But did you know that there are different “Cirque” groups?  Up until last week, I had no idea.  We’ve all heard of Cirque du Soleil, but for the last 20 years, Cirque Éloize has been taking people by storm in more than 440 cities around the world.

Cirque Éloize was founded in Montreal in 1993, over a decade after Cirque du Soleil and for the month of August, Cirque Éloize’s iD is playing at the Fox Theater at Foxwoods.

Cirque Éloize’s iD blends old-school acrobatics with street dance and hip hop. I got a chance to see the show last week and trust me, it’s not like any circus you’ve ever seen before.

But before I tell you what I thought of the show, I wanted to share a little bit about a fun opportunity I had the afternoon before the show.

IMG_8788

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have followed along with the fun last Friday when I joined several other local bloggers for an exclusive behind-the-scenes blogger workshop with some of the cast members of Cirque Éloize’s iD.

Pretty cool, right?

As soon as I entered the Fox Theater at Foxwoods,  I couldn’t help but notice the impressive set.  As you can see, it’s massive and as I would find out a little while later, it’s even more complex than it looks.  The set features about 10 doors & windows that the performers use throughout the show to come & go through – plus a quite a few moving parts. Recently my husband, Chris, and I had an oh-so-special night. You know what I’m talking about – the kind that doesn’t involve kids. That’s right, we got to go out on a date.  Alone. Without children.  Since he and I both love a good mystery, we decided to go to a murder mystery dinner show.   As far as I’m concerned, you can never go wrong with a little mystery, intrigue, and murder.

**Disclosure:  I was provided complimentary tickets to the show thanks to Vimbly in order to facilitate this post.  All opinions expressed here are strictly my own and were not influenced in any way.

We ended up choosing to go see the Crime and Pun-ishment Interactive Dinner, which is put on by The Murder Mystery Company at the Sons of Italy in Quincy, MA.

Here is the description of the show:

Things take a turn for the gutter at Mafia Don Lou Zar’s juice joint when someone is put on ice! The crowd is chock full of potential suspects. Jealous, jilted lovers, a rival Mafioso, and a pair of undercover feds make an appearance at this speakeasy and not a single person is muttering a word! Help find out who’s on the level and who’s on the lam by trading clues with your guests, gathering information, and solving the crime before the murderer hotfoots it out of there! Continue reading »

**Disclosure: I received a pair of tickets to see The Nutcracker at no charge in order to facilitate this post.  All opinions expressed here are strictly my own and were not influenced in any way**

When I was in the 4th grade, my class took a field trip into Boston to see a matinee performance of Boston Ballet’s Nutcracker.  Being nine years old at the time, I basically had no appreciation for what I was watching.  Fast forward to the present when I had a chance to go see this years production of The Nutcracker at The Boston Opera House and got a second chance to take in the show – as a “grown up” with a whole different outlook on the show.  My husband, Chris, had never even seen The Nutcracker before, so I knew he was going to be in for a real treat.

Boston Ballet The Nutcracker

“Mikko Nissinen’s The Nutcracker is based on the libretto by Alexandre Dumas père titled The Tale of the Nutcracker, which is adapted from E. T. A. Hoffmann’s story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.”

The show itself was absolutely breath taking.  All of the dancers were so graceful and they all did such a great job of telling the story through dance.  Chris and I sat there in awe throughout the entire show.

More than 300 dancers will perform in the new production and each performance has approximately 150 dancers involved. There are 250 children in the performance, making up three or four casts (classical ballet students from the Boston, Newton and North Shore studios). Continue reading »

*My family and I were invited to this attend WWE’s Money in the Bank live pay per view event and received tickets at no charge. No other compensation was received. All opinions expressed here are strictly my own and were not influenced in any way**

Back in March I chaperoned my youngest son’s class field trip to the aquarium.  On both the bus ride to the aquarium and the ride home, all the little boys talked about was wrestling.  John Cena this and Kane that.  It was really cute, but prior to that, I didn’t realize that my son knew anything about any of the WWE wrestlers.  When we got home that night I asked him about it and he sure schooled me.  He knew them all and talked my ear off for a good half hour about the WWE and mostly John Cena.

When my family received an invitation to attend the live pay-per-view (PPV) event, Money in the Bank on June 29, 2014 at the TD Garden in Boston, I knew it was going to be the highlight of my boys summer!

We arrived at the show about an hour before the event started and my boys were super excited when we got there and they saw the ring all set up!

WWE Money in the Bank PPV

At the beginning of the show, Former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan made an appearance and gave the audience an update on his neck surgery recovery was going.  As soon as they announced his name, the crowd went insane.  They cheered him for a good couple of minutes and after everyone settled down, he told us that he didn’t know when he was going to return and that he actually might need to have another surgery. **Masshole Mommy received four complimentary tickets to see Blue Man Group in Boston in exchange for my honest opinion.  All opinions expressed here are strictly my own and were not influenced in anyway**

Have you ever seen the Blue Man Group?  I recently had an opportunity to go see the show with my family and I don’t even think words can express how much we loved it.  I was super excited to take my family to see it.  I had seen the show three or four times in the past, but it was the first time seeing the show for my husband and boys.  Knowing them, I knew it was going to be a hit with all three of them and I was so happy that they all liked it even more than I thought they would.

Ok, so you’ve heard of Blue Man Group, but you’re not really sure what it’s all about, huh?  Well, it’s really hard to explain, so here’s what they say about the show on their website:

Blue Man Group combines music, technology and comedy to create a form of entertainment that defies categorization and appeals to people of all ages. Blue Man Group’s shows have been described by critics as “innovative,” “energetic” and “wildly entertaining.” But the only way to truly understand Blue Man Group’s global popularity is to see the show for yourself.

The show is about an hour and 40 minutes with no intermission, and it flew by.  I was shocked when I looked at my watch and saw that the show was nearly over.  Blue Man Group is fast moving and highly entertaining.  We were not bored for a second.  Honestly, if you are looking for something different to do with your family, check out the show – it’s very family friendly and so much fun! Last weekend Chris surprised me with tickets to a show called Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at a small community theater called The Curtain Call Theater in Braintree, MA.  I had never heard of this show before (and neither had he), but after reading the description of the show, I was excited to see it.  I was even more excited to check out the theater, though.  I had never been there and honestly some of the best shows I’ve ever seen have been put on at small, local theaters like this.

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? features husband and wife George and Martha in a night of dangerous fun and games. A stunning, almost unbearable revelation provides a climax that has shocked audiences for years.  When the play opened in Broadway over 50 years ago, Newsweek rightly foresaw Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? as “a brilliantly original work of art—an excoriating theatrical experience, surging with shocks of recognition and dramatic fire [that] will be igniting Broadway for some time to come.”  Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? won a 2013 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play.
