The Adventure Center at Killington Mountain

It’s been the word of the summer around here.  My oldest, who is a few weeks away from his 11th birthday has come down with a severe case of the tweens and my little man, who is a few weeks away from his 8th birthday, goes along with everything (and I do mean everything) his big brother says.

Since the boys got out of school, I have spent so much time planning activities to keep them busy, but apparently my idea of fun is not the same as my kids.  I don’t know what I was thinking when I took them to places like the beach, the town pool and the local splash pad.  All of those places are “boring” according to my children and believe me when I tell you how frustrating it is to hear that word come out of their mouths repeatedly for days on end.

Just imagine my delight when I found something that not only both of my boys loved, but they were actually really sad when we had to leave.

Mom for the win!

**Disclosure: My family received two complimentary day passes to the Adventure Center at Killington in order to experience it four ourselves and to facilitate this post. All opinions expressed here are strictly my own and were not influenced in any way.

I bet you’re wondering what this majestic place is? It’s the brand new Adventure Center at Killington Mountain. It just opened this year and my family got to experience two days there last week.  There are eight attractions in all at the Adventure Center, but there were a few that stood out as favorites for my boys.  Their absolute favorite was the Skye Ropes Course with the Skyeride being a very close second.

Here’s a look at what you can do at the Adventure Center:

Skye Ropes Course

The Skye Ropes Course stands four-stories high with 42 obstacles to maneuver.  Before you can get started on the course, you will have to get fitted for a harness in the Snowshed Lodge, which is also where you buy your tickets for the day.  Once you’re fitted with a harness, you get a full two hours on the course.  You don’t have to use the full 120 minutes, but chances are you’ll want the full two hours up there.  It’s so much fun for athletes of all ages.

Participants 42” – 48” must be chaperoned by an adult; participants under 42” are not permitted.  My little man just hit the 48″ mark, so he went up alone with his brother.  There is only one person per obstacle at a time for safety reasons (which is a very good thing) and you just pull your harness along with you as you go.  Pretty simple.

Roaring Brook Mining

The Roaring Brook Mining is a kid-friendly adventure, providing a great keepsake for miners of all ages. This one costs a little extra, but for us, it was totally worth it.   You can purchase a bag of dirt that’s filled with an assortment of rocks & gems when you buy your tickets and then pan for your treasure up at the Adventure Center. A 2 lb bag is $6 and a 3 lb bag is $8.   My boys are super into Minecraft and loved sifting their gems out of the dirt and matching them up to the little chart that came with the bag of dirt.  They had so much fun that they ended up mining again the second day we were there.

The Skyeride

The Skyeride is 600 feet long, 100 feet high and glides at 30 miles per hour. The comfortable mid-air adventure provides cool mountain breezes, side-by-side seating for two and unbeatable views all year ‘round.  My boys went on the Skyeride a few times and absolutely loved it.

The Terra-Maze

The Terra-Maze is located just below the Skye Ropes Course and offers 5,000 square feet of feet-on-the-ground exploration.  When you start the maze, you will receive your Terra-Maze Passport, which you will time stamp and then hit the course running. Find the four check points that spell the word MAZE the quickest, and you’ll win a small prize at the end of the maze.

K-1 Express Gondola Ride

You can enjoy a mile and a quarter ride up the K-1 Express Gondola to the top of 4,241-foot Killington Peak for breath-taking views, access to 15 miles of designated hiking trails and you can even have lunch up at the Peak Lodge, which features fresh local fare.

The gondola is located about a mile up the road from the rest of the Adventure Center attractions and there are different rates depending on age and number of people riding.  You can get all the rates here.

We loved hiking up at the top of Killington Mountain.  There are several trails up there and we picked one that was only about a mile long since it was pretty warm the day we were up there.

The views were truly amazing.

Disc Golf

Killington’s mountainside disc golf course offers a fun and challenging game for all ability levels, plus where else do you take a scenic lift ride to start your game? The course starts at the top of Snowshed and meanders its way back down to Snowshed Lodge. Each round includes a one-way ride up the Snowshed Express Quad to get you to the first tee.

Motorized Mountain Tours:

Hit the mountain with a guided tour on the ride of your choice – an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) or Segway! Experienced mountain guides show you the way, provide all the required safety gear and include an introduction to your vehicle of choice prior to hitting the trails.

An ATV allows for passengers to ride with a guide or another member of their party – so if you’re not ready to take the wheel, you can still enjoy the experience. Segways are for individual use only.

Mountain Bike Rentals:

Located at Snowshed Lodge, the Killington Bike Shop has everything you need to start your adventure, including tickets, trail passes, bike rentals and gear.  The experienced staff will set you up with a bike that best matches your ability and riding style – from freeride and cross-country to downhill.  Please note, bike rentals are available for ages 7 and up (minimum 48″ tall).

Spend Some Time on the Water:

At Killington, you can rent a Stand-up Paddle Board or kayak so that you can spend time of Snowshed Pond.

Kent Pond, located just five minutes from Snowshed is a bit larger and offers a beautiful setting for kayaking and paddle boarding as well. Two hour equipment rental and transportation to and from Kent Pond are also available from Snowshed Lodge. Check out pricing information here.

The Beast Mountain Coaster (Opening July 25th)

The Beast Mountain Coaster is a 4,800-foot-long alpine coaster that will twist and turn through the woods with 360-degree corkscrews and supply thrills for all ages.

We watched saw the construction while we were there and it looks like a heck of an impressive ride. We want to get back up there to ride the Beast Mountain Coaster once it’s up and running.  It looks seriously awesome.

You’re probably wondering how much all of this is going to cost. For all that’s included, I think the prices are very reasonable. You can purchase tickets for each attraction individually or you can get an Adventure Center Day Pass.  All tickets can be purchased at the Snowshed Lodge.

Adventure Center Day Pass – $39 (ages 7+); $15 (ages 6 and under), includes:

  • Skyeride, three rides
  • Skye Ropes Course, 2-hours
  • Terra-Maze, unlimited runs
  • Disc golf, one 18-hole round including discs
  • Snowshed scenic lift ride, round trip

  • Add three rides on the Beast Coaster for a total of $59 (ages 7+.) Beast Coaster opening in late July.
  • Add a round-trip K-1 Express Gondola ride for an additional $15

Activities and attractions not listed above are not included in an Adventure Center day pass but can be purchased individually.

We had such a good time at Killington’s Adventure Center and think we are going to make visiting it an annual tradition in our family. It was so refreshing not to hear the word “bored” come out of either of the boys mouths for two whole days.

Wondering where we stayed while we were there? Come back tomorrow to read all about the Killington Grand Resort Hotel.

Which Adventure Center attraction would you like to try first?
