On Sunday night I went into Boston with some friends to see The Package Tour – Boys II Men, 98 Degrees and Boston’s own New Kids on the Block.
I first saw NKOTB at the old Foxboro Stadium (the old stadium that my beloved New England Patriots played in before they built the snazzy new Gillette Stadium that they play in now) when I was in the ninth grade. So, if you’re better at math than I am – we’re talking a little over 20 years ago. Imagine being a girl at the ripe old age of 14 getting to see her biggest crush…..let’s just say that at the time, it was pretty much one of the greatest nights of my life.
But some things never change.
Here is is 2013 and there were more girls there with crimped hair than should have been (for the record, that number should have been a big fat zero). I understand that that NKOTB were big in the late 80’s/early 90’s, but that doesn’t mean that anyone needed to dress up like they were stuck in that time period. You know what I mean? Besides, who the hell even still has their crimper from 1989 anyways?
Oh, and there was this chick with a banana clip. And again, I have to ask – who still has one of these in their house?
One of my favorite things of the night was seeing this guy (who was one in about ten guys in attendance) in a New Kids t-shirt. He was seated in the row right in front of us, so we got to look at it all night long. Seriously.
Once the show actually started, Boys II Men were the first act that played and they got the crowd going pretty good. They were pretty big back in their day and everyone there knew every song they sang.
Then 98 Degrees came out and to say they were boring as hell is a complete understatement. The entire crowd lost it’s mojo and it seemed like the majority of the people in the audience lost interest. The girls next to us were playing candy crush during their entire set. I think they should have opened the show because they were the least popular group of the three, but I’m sure they had their reasons for putting the groups in that order.
Finally, around 9 pm, the New Kids came on and played for about two hours. They were awesome and Donnie Wahlberg has always been and still is “the cute one”. The show was so good and because they are from Boston, I think that made the show that much better – especially when they came out in Red Sox jerseys during their finale.
Remember the guy in the New Kids t-shirt. He was pretty loaded, but that didn’t stop him from singing along to all the songs, – even the love songs – and he knew every word. .. I kid you not. He had been there with his wife/girlfriend and another couple. The other couple ended up getting into some kind of a huge fight and the girl stormed off. The New Kids t-shirt’s wife/girlfriend went off to console her, leaving the two men at the seats alone.
And this happened during the song I’ll Be Loving You Forever. Yup.
All in all, it was a great show and did I mention how hot Donnie Wahlberg is?
