Like me, you’ve probably seen the tv commercials for DNA kits.  They seem to be all the rage these days and I would be lying if I said that I didn’t want to try one.  All four of my grandparents were the first generation born in the US. Based on what they told me over the years, I thought I had a good handle on what I was made up of, but you never know right? I recently did have a chance to take a DNA kit thanks to MyHeritage and not only was it super easy to get my results, I was a little surprised by the results I got back.

MyHeritage is the leading global destination for discovering, preserving and sharing family history. Their platform and DNA kits make it easy for anyone, anywhere to embark on a meaningful journey into their past and treasure their family stories for generations to come. Their powerful technology does the searching for you, so you can get new information about your family history very easily – any time you want it.

MyHeritage has a huge international records database so all you have to do is search a name to learn more about your ancestors. Their exclusive content and accurate results will help you uncover more than you ever imagined about your roots.

They search for people whose DNA matches yours: your relatives. Their DNA Matching technology reveals the percentage of DNA you share with your matches, showing you how closely related you are. That way you can connect with your newly found relatives to learn more about your family and discover shared ancestors.

Here’s how My Heritage DNA testing works:

1. Start by taking a simple cheek swab. There is no blood or spit involved! The cheek swab literally takes two minutes and it will reveal YOUR detailed ethnic origins.

2. Mail your cheek swab to their lab in the envelope that they enclosed in your package.

3. Receive your results online in 4 weeks!

While you wait for your results, use the time to set up a family tree on MyHeritage. It’s totally free and could potentially increase the benefit from your DNA analysis as it will allow better understanding of your ethnicity report and better matching with potential relatives. If you already have a tree on Ancestry or other services – you can easily export them to GEDCOM file and then upload to MyHeritage.

Before I sent my cheek swab off to MyHeritage I thought I would be prepared for my results. Here’s what I knew: Both of my grandfathers were 100% Italian. One of my grandmothers was Scottish and the other was Polish. That’s all the information I had on them based on what my grandparents had told me.

So when this part of my results came in, there was really no surprise there…

The English and Middle Eastern parts were both totally shocking to me. I had no idea about either one and since I was told that my father’s mother was 100% Scottish, I was really surprised that the Scottish part was the lowest percentage.

I bet you totally want to take your own DNA test now?
