Staying cool at Disney World during a hot Florida summer isn’t so easy when you are surrounded by hundreds of acres of pavement. Trust me, I know from experience. Four out of the last six of my family’s Disney trips were during the month of August, so I can definitely attest to how hot & humid it can be down there in the summer. Still, there are plenty of ways to stay cool, cool down and get wet during the park’s hottest summer days. The best part is that keeping cool takes what could be an almost ruined day and turns it into one of the best days you and the kids can have at the parks. There are tons of indoor options, water rides and even a pair of really exciting water parks that can easily take an entire day to enjoy.
If you end up at Disney World during one of Florida’s notoriously hot days, try one of these great ideas to keep everyone cool and happy.
Carry Beverage Bottles
Whether you decide to buy reusable water bottles or splurge on themed Disney bottles for everyone, make sure you carry beverage bottles that you can refill as the day progresses. One of the struggles of a hot day is keeping everyone hydrated and not only do drinks do that, but cold ones cool you down as fast as you drink up. Carry and fill up so you always have drinks on hand as you stand in the sun to wait for the next ride. Any one of the quick service restaurants will fill your cup with water for free, so take advantage!
Mix Outdoor Rides With Indoor Ones
The Disney parks are filled with a huge number of rides that are indoors, so it is actually very easy to mix those that are entirely outdoors with those that are inside. The great thing about these indoor rides is that their lines are also mostly indoors. Try to do as many of the outdoor rides early and later in the day as possible, saving the time when it is hottest for the rides that are indoors in order to minimize your time in the sun.
Add Shows to Your Itinerary
There are a lot of really great and popular shows at Disney World, and adding a couple of them to your itinerary is a great way to ensure that you get a little bit of everything available to you at Disney in. This also serves to cool the family down when it just gets so hot that you can’t stay outside anymore but don’t want to leave the park either. Like the rides, make a top five list of shows that you think will appeal to the entire family and then choose from the list based on the time of day that you need to take a break.
Get On All the Water Rides
There are water rides in most of the parks that are easy to mix into your day like you would with the indoor and outdoor options. When it is hot out these lines are going to be longer, but they are often shaded and have fans installed along the line route. Prepare for these longer rides with personal mini fans, spray bottles to mist everyone down and water bottles on hand.
Add A Water Park Day
Add a day at one of the two waterparks to your itinerary if you are booking a day at the parks during the summer months. Blizzard Beach Water Park and Typhoon Lagoon Water Park are two popular destinations at Disney because they really outdo any other water park you’ve ever been to. Often there are fun themed events and activities that take place at these water parks too, so you get so much more value for your ticket and don’t feel like you need to rush back to any of the parks.
