Keeping Cool at Disney World

Staying cool at Disney World during a hot Florida summer isn’t so easy when you are surrounded by hundreds of acres of pavement. Trust me, I know from experience.   Four out of the last six of my family’s Disney trips were during the month of August, so I can definitely attest to how hot & humid it can be down there in the summer. Still, there are plenty of ways to stay cool, cool down and get wet during the park’s hottest summer days. The best part is that keeping cool takes what could be an almost ruined day and turns it into one of the best days you and the kids can have at the parks. There are tons of indoor options, water rides and even a pair of really exciting water parks that can easily take an entire day to enjoy.

If you end up at Disney World during one of Florida’s notoriously hot days, try one of these great ideas to keep everyone cool and happy.

Carry Beverage Bottles

Whether you decide to buy reusable water bottles or splurge on themed Disney bottles for everyone, make sure you carry beverage bottles that you can refill as the day progresses. One of the struggles of a hot day is keeping everyone hydrated and not only do drinks do that, but cold ones cool you down as fast as you drink up. Carry and fill up so you always have drinks on hand as you stand in the sun to wait for the next ride.  Any one of the quick service restaurants will fill your cup with water for free, so take advantage!

Mix Outdoor Rides With Indoor Ones

The Disney parks are filled with a huge number of rides that are indoors, so it is actually very easy to mix those that are entirely outdoors with those that are inside. The great thing about these indoor rides is that their lines are also mostly indoors. Try to do as many of the outdoor rides early and later in the day as possible, saving the time when it is hottest for the rides that are indoors in order to minimize your time in the sun.

Add Shows to Your Itinerary

There are a lot of really great and popular shows at Disney World, and adding a couple of them to your itinerary is a great way to ensure that you get a little bit of everything available to you at Disney in. This also serves to cool the family down when it just gets so hot that you can’t stay outside anymore but don’t want to leave the park either. Like the rides, make a top five list of shows that you think will appeal to the entire family and then choose from the list based on the time of day that you need to take a break.

Get On All the Water Rides

There are water rides in most of the parks that are easy to mix into your day like you would with the indoor and outdoor options. When it is hot out these lines are going to be longer, but they are often shaded and have fans installed along the line route. Prepare for these longer rides with personal mini fans, spray bottles to mist everyone down and water bottles on hand.

Add A Water Park Day

Add a day at one of the two waterparks to your itinerary if you are booking a day at the parks during the summer months. Blizzard Beach Water Park and Typhoon Lagoon Water Park are two popular destinations at Disney because they really outdo any other water park you’ve ever been to. Often there are fun themed events and activities that take place at these water parks too, so you get so much more value for your ticket and don’t feel like you need to rush back to any of the parks.

How does your family stay cool on a hot day at a theme park?

  1. We do most of these things on our Disney trips too. Especially a refillable water bottle and the indoor shows!

  2. Yup just fresh back from Disney only last week and agree with all and would add misting fans to your list as these were also huge lifesavers for keeping cool. Oh and also going in the evening and utilizing the parks late hours helped, too.

  3. I just came back from 3 days at Hershey Park. It was 95 degrees while we were there. What we did was to get to the park at opening and then leave mid afternoon. We used that time for a lunch/ supper and headed back to the hotel for some pool time. Everyone was refreshed when we went back to the park @7.

  4. We do all of the above LOL Every day, all day here in Florida! I’m so ready for Fall…

  5. Carrying our own water is a must when we’re at a theme park in the summer. I have friends who were just at Disney in July – SO hot! These are all great tips!

  6. These are wonderful tips for staying cool st Disney. Water is very important, so I make sure we bring our own bottles.

  7. I’ve been hesitant to visit in the summer because I dread sweating in the Florida heat, but I’ll do anything for my son and he wants to visit Disney, so bring on the heat! I appreciate your tips to make it through the day.

  8. Can’t agree more…we brought our own bottles but at the end of the day we bought some as we needed the cool ones :). I always try to get to the attractions with AC on it :). And Florida sun is soooo hot indeed 🙂

  9. Ahhh yes.. it can get pretty crazy hot here when we visit our theme parks too and we love to hide from the heat at the show auditoriums! 😛

  10. These are great tips, we could totally apply them here in LA to Disneyland!

  11. This is such an important post. I’ve heard horror stories about families getting heat stroke and dehydrated during their Disney vacations.

  12. Wow. I have never been to Blizzard Beach Water Park and Typhoon Lagoon Water Park. I will have to check those out.

  13. You have to add jumping into a souvenir store (or the Coca-Cola store in Epcot) for a free and quick cool-off!

  14. I’ve never been to the Disney waterparks. I would like to go though, they do look amazing and yep, def. a great way to stay cool.

Oh and I’ve been to Disney in August, lol. Tips on how to stay cool are oh so welcome. 🙂

  15. These are really good tips! We usually go late in the year so it’s not too bad heat wise, but I do love sneaking into a show or an indoor ride when it does start to heat up!

  16. I love water rides, so I’d be hitting those up for sure.

  17. We did Disney in August last year and I sure wish I would have had these tips!

  18. These are some excellent tips! We always bring umbrellas and tons of water.

  19. Themed Disney bottles are nice, but I would suggest you buy them outside the park. They are way cheaper than if you’d buy them inside the park. These are great tips you’ve sared.

  20. Great tips! It’s very important to keep cool especially in parks as big as Disney. You naturally want to get the most out of your vacation and don’t want to end up getting dizzy because of the heat.

  21. Great tips. Definitely hit shows or indoors rides during the hottest part of the day. If you are staying on property I would suggest going back to room fro pool and nap.

  22. Have you ever seen those fans you carry around? Some of them also spray water. They work, but then it might mess up my hair worse than it is…. so I prefer to be hot.

  23. I actually never knew there was a water park there too! These are some great tips to staying cool. Down there you need everything you can do to stay cool.

  24. I have never been to the water parks. I’m sure they’re great but I’d rather relax at the pool.

  25. I always, always, always bring a water bottle! It makes a huge difference.

  26. Some great tips. I’ve never been to Disney World and we don’t get temperatures like that usually in the UK, so I can’t imagine being in a busy theme park when it gets that hot!

  27. I remember when I was a performer at Disneyland Paris in 2004 and it was one of the hottest summers, it was unbearable! They where spraying water on Main Street and most of my dance crew slept in baths (not filled with water!) or on the balcony to try and stay cool at night!

We took my daughter to Disneyland Paris in February… Was more a case of keeping warm that time lol!

    Kay x

  28. We are going to disneyworld in December .. How hot will it be there then? I know it will be warm for us but I’m not sure if it’s going to be swim suit weather?

  29. The florida heat can be so miserable! We always go on the water rides a a few times to try and keep cool.

  30. I love going to the shows when we’re at Disney. Especially the indoors — the A/C always feels amazing!

  31. These are great tips. Between the sun, the crowds, and the actual air temperature, Disney can roast you!

  32. Great tips to stay cool! I woudl try to do whatever saves the most money!

  33. Let me tell you about my Disney experience. While we were there, I couldn’t really complain too much about the heat (we went in October, so it wasn’t bad). However, my feet were killing me after two straight days of walking through huge theme parks, so on the third day, at Hollywood Studios, my husband rented a wheelchair and rolled me around the park so that I would not have to miss any of the fun! That was the best day at the park hands down!

  34. We’ve been to Disney several times, and we always wear our hats and keep water with us. It can get very hot there with the Florida sun beating down.

  35. Love these tips for staying cool. I’m a big fan of the water rides to do so!

  36. These are all great ways to stay cool at Disney. We always hit the water rides in the middle of the afternoon when it is the hottest.

  37. Carrying beverages is the best idea! It’s so important to stay hydrated and can easily get forgotten when there’s so much fun to be had at Disney. Our last trip was in April and it still got to 98 degrees! That’s super hot for a family from Maine! lol

  38. Nicely organized article with some good ideas.
I especially liked the idea of getting your empty glass filled with water for free along quick-serve restaurants – great point and did not think of that one!

  39. Those are great tips! WE struggle with heat even at our zoos! So these tips work perfectly for any outdoor attraction site.

  40. I love this article. When we went to Disney the first time, we learned the hard way that you have to be prepared for the heat!

  45. Fantastic tips – i want to go back to Disney but I always worried about it being to hot. x

  46. I’m weird that I don’t like the heat! I’d probably visit the park during the colder months of the year so it won’t be as hot. If I was there on a hot day, I’d make sure to drink lots of water and wear a hat.

  47. These are great tips! I like to stay at a Disney resort so we can go back to our room and take a nap, watch a movie, or hang by the pool during the hottest time of the day.

  48. I agree with all of your tips! We also try to wear light clothing like tank tops, I see you did too. Even carrying those water bottles with fans on the end help out too.

  49. Great sugestions! I like the adding shows tip- that’s one that I probably would have overlooked.

  50. I would love to go to Disney World someday. I only recently went to Florida and it was for Universal Studios.

  51. I’m so jealous! I cant wait to go back to Disney with my kids! I went ages ago and I’ve have dying to go back!

  52. These are all such great tips. We try to use these strategies when we head to the massive zoo in our area–everyone gets so crabby when they are too hot!

  53. This is such a vivid memory, even though for me it happened decades ago. My husband and I took our daughters to Disney World in July one year. On our last day there I succumbed to heat exhaustion and they all had to escort me back to the hotel. My husband then had to take the girls back out by himself for the remainder of the day and evening. I had never been so sick from heat before. These are great tips!

  54. Somehow I don’t think it is the kids that mind the heat so much as the adults. Good suggestions for cooling off.

  55. I like the idea about mixing the Rides to include both Indoor and Outdoor! Doesn’t Disney have a mist area where families can get cool?
