I am always on the go; even when I plan to relax, I don’t relax. The teenage son and two dogs ensure that I don’t. I kept reading and hearing all kinds of things about Himalayan salt caves, so I decided to do a bit more research and find out what all of the hype was about.

Salt therapy, also known as Halotherapy, has been around for centuries. It is a natural therapeutic treatment that is used to treat a variety of ailments. Itโ€™s said to help with respiratory conditions, acne, depression, allergies, eczema, stress, psoriasis, and anxiety. There are no side effects, and it is safe for all ages.

The benefits of salt therapy were noted in Eastern Europe back in the 12th century, and it has been used there since; it just never really caught on here in the US. It was first noticed that salt miners did not suffer from the same afflictions as the rest of the population. Once people realized this, they began going into the salt caves to reap the benefits of breathing in the salt vapors. Salt contains over 80 minerals that are essential to maintaining a healthy body. Salt is also said to help with migraines, detoxify, and help with insomnia and joint pain, as it is a natural anti-inflammatory as well as an anti-microbial and anti-bacterial.

After reading all of these purported health benefits, I decided that I needed to try it out for myself. Luckily for me, there is one only about 30 minutes away from where I live, so I excitedly called and scheduled a session for myself and my best friend.

When we arrived, we were asked to remove our shoes and were told that cell phones were not allowed in the cave (DISCLAIMER: I knew I would be writing this blog, so I snuck my phone in to take a few pictures. I did it all for you!). Upon walking in, we were told to help ourselves to a blanket and in front of us were nine zero-gravity lounge chairs. The room was warm, but not too warm and there was low lighting; all in all, a very welcoming space. The floor is crushed Himalayan salt, and the walls are salt bricks. There is a glow from the salt fireplace, and there was soft music and ocean sounds playing. Very calming and relaxing.

As I lay on my lounge chair, it occurred to me how truly relaxed I was. I canโ€™t remember another time where I have felt that relaxed. I am not a massage person (I donโ€™t particularly enjoy strangers touching me), but this is what I suspect most people feel like during a massage. There was one other person in the cave with us whom I wonโ€™t dwell on too much (she was a bit strange) other than to say that she was breathing really loud and it was a bit distracting. Once I was able to tune her out, it was all good.

As for the health benefits, I don’t know how many sessions one is supposed to have before they should notice a difference, but I went in with a sore arm from shoveling, and that was gone when I left. My friend had a headache when we went in and left without it. Maybe it was all in our heads, maybe we just wanted to believe it, or maybe it really did help. Who knows. All I know is that it was the most relaxing 45 minutes of my life and well worth the $45 I spent for it. We enjoyed it so much that we scheduled another session for next month and are bringing other friends with us.

I know that I didn’t mention the name of the spa that we went to and that is strictly because I smuggled my camera in and I don’t want to get myself into trouble. There are only a few such spas in New England, so by the power of deduction, you can probably figure out which one I went to. I will say this: the staff was super nice, and I would highly recommend this spa.

Have you ever been to a salt cave or have you been thinking of going?
