A couple of weekends ago, Chris & I took the boys to a Providence Bruins game. The P-Bruins are the AHL team for the Boston Bruins and they played theΒ Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the day we went.

“The American Hockey League is a 30-team professional ice hockey league based in the United States and Canada that serves as the primary developmental circuit for the National Hockey League”

The P-Bruins play down in Rhode Island at the Dunkin Donuts Center (aka the dunk). Tickets are MUCH cheaper than tickets to a Boston Bruins game and frankly, it’s a lot more fun for the kids.

I got the tickets the night before and there were still great seats available. I ended up scoring us third row seats right behind the players box.

We were right next to where the players came out, too, which was pretty cool.

Here is my nine year old scoring himself some hand slaps from the players as they took the ice.

The boys loved watching them practice before the game:

It was an awesome game and we all really enjoyed being so close to the players.

There were a couple of good fights, too.

Of course, the highlight of the day wasn’t the game -it was the Zamboni machines. Β At least as far as my kids went.

And it just wouldn’t be an outing with my little guy if there wasn’t some sort of meltdown while we were there:

Want to know why he was so upset? Because he, his brother & Chris made it onto the Fan Cam up on the jumbotron & he didn’t want to be on tv. No, I am no kidding.

We didn’t win the game (the score was 5 to 1, Penguins), but we still had a blast at the game.

  1. I love watching hockey! I think it’s cute that he didn’t want to be on the screen when most kids want to be on the screen. I think watching the practice is fun too.

  2. Awesome seats it was a great time

  3. No outing would be complete without some sort of meltdown here either. So totally feel your pain!

  4. Looks like a fun hockey game .. I like going to cheaper baseball games too

  5. I can relate – when I was four I was selected from the audience to announce something, and I wouldn’t do it – saying no whilst on TV. Otherwise I would say, how cool is that! Great seats and wonderful shots.

  6. Looked like all was having fun till….the meltdown heheh! awww!

    Have a hockeytastic week πŸ˜‰

  7. I havent been to a game for years. It was fun to go to one once in awhile. That sounds like what my Emily would do. lol

  8. Looks like it was a fun time for all.

  9. So as I have noticed little man is not the type to like a lot of attention. He is a lot like my baby. If he wants to be on camera that is one thing, if not forget. Thank heavens he has gotten past the meltdown stage but there were days. Looks like other than that slight glitch ya’ll had a good time. I have never been to a hockey game. Kentucky had a hockey team once upon a time called the Thoroughblades but it didn’t last long.

  10. Nice seat location, and cool that your oldest got to slap hands while they came out!!

LOL at your youngest. Kids are a riot. πŸ™‚

  11. Confession: I’ve never watched an entire hockey game. Not on T.V. Not in real life. Can we still be friends? πŸ˜‰

  12. awww, your little guy! I’ve never been to a hockey game in real life but I’ve started to watch on TV with my husband. My daughter enjoys the fights.. She is only 5.. Maybe I should be worried?

  13. LOL about your little guy! Glad you had fun, though, despite the minor meltdown.

  14. Those are amazing seats! (makes the game easier to watch when you are that close too lol)

  15. My kids have meltdowns like that sometimes too. Sometimes they get so tired that they will make up any kind of excuse to throw a fit. But it looks like you still had a good time at the game. It’s been years since I’ve gone to a hockey game. Have a fabulous day!

  16. what a reta game and the boys look like they had fun

  17. What a cool way to spend the game! I love that they were so close to get High 5’s from the players. Reminds me of the time when I was a little girl, we got seats close to where the minor league baseball players were practicing. I was able to get many autographs that day. Such fun!

  18. I so so miss my Season tickets to the Kingston Frontenacs (OHL) back in my hometown! They wear the black, gold and white too. That was back when we had an awesome line up of Chris Gratton, David Ling, Brett Lindros and Chad Kilger. Great games. some better than the NHL

Doug Gilmour is the General Manager now and Todd Gill is the coach. And I have not seen a game since they moved to the new arena.
but yeah, my kids would probably like the zamboni the best too.

  19. It’s great to go and see live sport games with the family. The Zamboni machines, the game, the ball, the players it’s all so exciting specially for little ones.
I’m happy it was so much fun for all of you.

  20. That’s so funny…My kids would have learned to be on the tv! Looks like they had a great time besides the meltdown though!

  21. A Providence Hockey game would be fun for sure. We’ve never been to one, but the boys would love it. Gotta love melt downs….I remember them well. My nine year old can still break down every so often….So you may have a few more years for those! πŸ™‚ (Cute!)

  22. I’ve always wanted to go to a hockey game. I got tickets to go once, and then Isaak got sick. πŸ™ It looks like fun.

  23. I love Hockey but I’m a sad Maple Leafs fan lol Nothing beats a good old hockey game. Maybe that’s just the Canadian in me talking. You should see when Detroit and Toronto play I don’t know who to cheer for.

  24. What fun! My daughter and I went to a Chicago Fire Soccer game once and had so much fun!

  25. Looks like fun, except for getting on the cam, haha! I’ve never been to a hockey game, I don’t even know where the closest hockey team is.

  26. I can tell that your youngest is very emotional, he is just like my son hehehe. I have never experienced watching this kind of game.

  27. Fun family event! I’m not a sports fan, but going to live games is exciting.

  28. I am not a hockey fan but love all of the energy from a live game! The excitement of the fans, the roar of the crowd! What a great experience for your boys!

  29. I am not really a hockey fan, but I have always wanted to watch one live game. You are such a cool mamma. Such fun times with your boys. They will have some stories to tell their own kids one day……yes it will happen one day πŸ™‚

  30. I miss going to watch hockey, it is so much better live. I have never had seats quite as good as you were able to get – you are lucky!

  31. My sons are long past that age but I remember the melt downs so well. Looks like he had a good time in spite of that. Your boys are so cute!

  32. I just attended my first hockey game a few years ago and I had a great time.

  33. I always wanted to take my boys to a hockey game. Looks like you all had a blast, thank you so much for sharing. I really want to take my boys now.

  34. I went to my first hockey game over the weekend & it was so fun! Glad you guys had a blast, too! πŸ˜€

  35. Looks like you had a great time well of course apart from the little meltdown lol,i have never been to ice hockey.

  36. I havent been to a hockey game in a long time but this looks like such fun.

  37. Looks like they had a fun time! My MIL is actually from Wilkes-Barre! Didn’t even know they had a hockey team lol.

  38. You were right near me! We go to Bruins games a lot here! They are so much fun!

  39. How fun! I went to my first hockey game (ever) about two years ago and it was awesome. I love how cold it is in the stadium. Much better than sitting outside watching football or baseball and sweating to death. I really want to take my little girl to one when her attention span is a bit longer lol

  40. I recently went to my first hockey game. It’s so much fun to watch the games live!

  41. We used to have a minor league hockey team in our city. It was a lot of fun! Though, I have to admit, I once fell asleep during a game. I blame it on the fact that I had to be up at 4 a.m. for work every weekend (and it was a Saturday night.)

  42. We loved hockey games pre-kids, wonder if our girls would like them. I’d be pretty sad if I didn’t make it on the jumbotron too *LOL*

  43. LOVE that the boys are wearing NE Patriots shirts! We are pats fans too! And have you seen the documentary on Hulu called Behind the Mask? The WilkesBarre Penguin is featured on it! Such an awesome show.

  44. Ah, no! Most kids love being on the jumbotron!

I adore going to hockey games, though we haven’t taken the kids yet.

  45. Awww πŸ™ Poor kiddo. Most kids love being on those things but I have one daughter who wouldn’t like it either.

  46. You’re cracking me up about the meltdown. I’m sure you weren’t cracking up in the moment though. It sounds like a fun activity, but girl, I can’t watch those fights!

  47. I remember once hearing a story about a Zamboni going through a drive through somewhere. Looks like you had a good time at the game.

  48. Your family has so much fun together! I can hardly get my husband and daughter out of the house, I am a little jealous! πŸ™‚

  49. I find that minor league team games are often better than the major league games, especially when factoring in costs. Evansville, Indiana has a minor league baseball and hockey team and I love going to both games when I go back to visit family πŸ™‚

  50. Haha! He was mad about being on the jumbotron, my kiddo would’ve been mad if he didn’t get on the jumbotron. Looks like you had fun, add me to the jealous list!

  51. Not a hockey fan, but we don’t really have a local team here anyway. I’d love to take my oldest (almost 3) to a game of some sort, but not sure how he’d handle it.

  52. Oh my goodness that looks like fun! I LOVE taking my boys to local events like this! These types of outings are some of my favorite memories growing up!

  53. The DUNK. That’s hilarious. I hope they at least have a donut shop IN the arena!

  54. You guys have the funnest activities. It’s so amazing to me that you take your boys out to such unforgettable events all the time. <3 You'll all look back at the jumbotron thing and laugh about it in a few years!

  55. I’ve never been to a hockey game. I think my boys are a bit too young that they’d be scared by all the noise and the intense game. But someday, I want to take them.

  56. It has been forever since I have been to a hockey game. We used to go see the Tampa Bay Lightning play all the time. Glad ya’ll had a good time.

  57. hee hee…
It was probably warmer on the ice than it is outside!

Β«LouisΒ» thanks you for linking with his Wordless Wednesday

  58. Aww bet they had a great time, looks like so much fun πŸ™‚

  59. What a fun experience! They look so happy – we love hockey!

  60. My son and I have always enjoyed going to the Lightning games. Sporting events are always so much fun for kids.

  61. I wish we lived closer because I swear our kids would get along so well! My youngest has a meltdown whenever we go anywhere and it is always over something that wouldn’t bother anyone else πŸ™‚ Your kids are cute as always!

  62. My husband would love to check out one of these games! You had a super close seat to catch all the action!!

  63. whaaat a gameee….must be enjoyable…i never watched those games live…should try it one day..

  64. Hockey games!!!! YES PLEASE! We’re Capitals fans in the Sergeant House, but will watch any team because we love hockey. We a little hesitant to take the kids to a pro-game, but I’m sure the day will come soon. Thank you for sharing this outing with your adorable fam!

  65. I love hockey so much. I wish they had a place near us

  66. semi pro games are almost always more fun to watch. i still miss the whalers though

  67. Very cool.

Love minor league hockey. Our ECHL team in San Francisco just folded this week.

  68. Poor little guy didn’t want to be seen by the whole place! My kid would have probably hammed it up for everyone lol. I have never been to a hockey game but want to go at some point.

  69. What a fun outing. I have always wanted to ride on the zambonie!! LOL Maybe one day I will get to. πŸ™‚

  70. Hockey is my favorite sport! I have not been to a game in awhile, but got to see my favorite team the Pittsburgh Penguins!

  71. meltdowns come with the territory of being a parent. as long as he had a good time overall, that’s all that counts

  72. Looks like everyone had a great time, minus the meltdown! We don’t have hockey here so I’ve never been to a hockey game, I bet my 12 yr old would love it.

  73. Looks like they had so much fun. Meltdowns happen especially when there are lots of stimulators.

  74. Aww, this looks like a great time! We’ve been to minor league baseball games with the kids (super fun), but will have to find our closest AHL team to check out a hockey game!

  75. I love going to hockey games! We just went to the Sharks game the other night. It was a blast and sold out, loved it!

  76. How fun! I haven’t been to an ice hockey game since I was in college. We really need to go again soon.

  77. That’s awesome – my bf would totally be jealous! πŸ™‚

  78. I love going to live games! I was at the Toronto Maple Leafs game last night (they kicked some Florida Panther butt … yay!) and it was fun πŸ™‚

  79. Ahh shy guy, but still looks like you guys had a super fun time. Zambonie is such a fun word to say, now I will repeat several times today πŸ™‚ Thanks for sharing!

  80. The ONLY way to watch hockey is live and in person! It’s so much better that way.

  81. We love taking the boys to the hockey games here in town. So much fun!

  82. I’m not much of a fan of sports, but it be cool to catch a hockey someday.
