This is a sponsored post by Mirum Shopper. All opinions are my own.

A couple months ago my 10 year old niece started saying that she hated school and didn’t want to go anymore. I was shocked because this kid has loved her classmates, her teachers and everything about school since the first day when she started Pre-K. I knew something was going on and I took some time to speak to her alone in her room. My niece is beautiful, inside and out. She is pretty enough to be a model but more importantly, her personality and her heart is even prettier. She is a sweetheart – always wanting to help someone, defending someone who is being bullied – she loves just about everyone she meets.

In her room that day, she told me that a boy in her class called her ugly and told her she was too skinny and looked like a skeleton. What she confided in me not only broke my heart, but it gave me flashbacks to when I was her age. You see, I was the fat kid back then. I was teased when I was her age and my reaction was the same as hers; I didn’t want to go to school anymore. A place I loved became a place I dreaded going to and it hurt me to even think that the same thing could be happening to my niece.

I knew I had to do something to help her so I shared my story with her. When I was done, she was so surprised that I had gone through the teasing and not wanting to go to school because of it also. We talked a lot that day about self esteem and self worth. We talked about being unique and how it makes you special, how being pretty is nice but being a kind person with a good heart is even better. I showed her videos from when she was younger that show her dancing and she couldn’t believe how far she has come in her ballet and hip hop dancing. I think she realized how all the different things about her – her talents, her heart, her love of learning, her loyalty, her sense of humor, her kindness – are the things that really matter and the things that truly make someone beautiful because the next morning she told me that she was ready to go to school.

This situation that happened with my niece is one of the reasons that I support the Dove Self Esteem Project. For more than 10 years Dove has been helping young people with self-esteem education. They have reached 17 million of them so far and I want that number to keep growing and growing. Dove knows that as a girl is growing up being anxious about her appearance can really keep her from reaching her full potential. This can affect a girl’s health, relationships and grades. We need to teach our girls to take a new look at themselves and other girls by setting a good example for them and also telling them how amazing they are. Our girls pick up so much from us and they will see that we face the same pressures about our looks and our weight from friends and family. We need to keep in mind that the way we handle those pressures will make a huge impact on them and their sense of self worth.

We have always loved Dove products because they are affordable and really amazing. Dove ‘Original Clean’ Advanced Care Deodorant keeps me fresh and dry. My skin is always soft from the Dove ‘Deep Moisture’ Body Wash and it smells so good. My husband loves the Dove ‘White’ Beauty Bar and refuses to use anything else. Dove also believes that no girl should be held back from reaching her full potential which we love and we are proud to support the Dove Self Esteem Project. When you buy the following Dove products at Shaws you can help support the Dove Self Esteem Project too.

– Dove ‘Deep Moisture’ Body Wash

– Dove ‘White’ Beauty Bar (2 pack)

– Dove ‘Original Clean’ Advanced Care Deodorant

– Dove ‘Daily Moisture’ Nutritive Solutions Shampoo (12 oz.)

  1. This is so awesome! With so many messages out there about having to be a certain size or having the right kind of butt or chest, we need to make sure we build up our daughters’ self esteem.

  2. I love this so much. My daughters are already starting to doubt themselves because they don’t look like the women on television. This is so important.

  3. This is such a great program. Too many girls are exposed to messages that make them doubt themselves.

  4. Love it! Between the Kardashians and the mean, sexist, or both comments on social media, girls need all the help they can get to remember that just being themselves is enough.

  5. What a great conversation to have with your niece! Dove is doing such a wonderful work with their self-esteem project and I’m excited to see that they have reached over 17 million young people.

  6. What a great conversation to have with your niece! Dove is doing such a wonderful work with their self-esteem project and I’m excited to see that they have reached over 17 million young people.

  7. I was bullied too! I was JUST self confident enough to just let it go, but most I know it hurts SO bad. She is not alone and I am glad that Dove has something like this!

  8. Love. Kids need all of the love and support they can get. Middle school totally killed my self-esteem. I’m so happy Dove is working on this.

  9. Dove has a great line of products and is the only soap my son and I can use. I will have to try the shampoo.

  10. As a mom of a 14 year old I constantly am finding myself talking to her about mean girls. I wish schools had more clubs that promoted women empowering women. As women we need to build each other up and it starts with our kids.

  11. Awesome Cause to support along with lovely products. I dont know anyone who doesnt have a dove product 🙂 thanks for sharing Robin!

  12. I was bullied as well, by my next door neighbor! It ended when I punched him in the nose when he spoke poorly of my mom and my brother. Not the way to do it, though. I love Dove’s promotion, too. Thanks for the coupon.

  13. Love this post!! <3 So many girls are being picked on from being over weight to being too skinny, wearing makeup, or not enough makeup. People think they can judge someone else's appearance and body, but every girl and woman is beautiful and unique. I love how Dove has embraced natural beauty and the differences that make us all our own person and lovely. Like the quote says "admire someone else's beauty without questioning your own."

  14. This is long over due from companies. I struggled with body issues as a kid.

  15. We love Dove products in our home. I will be supporting this cause because we don’t intend on switching any time soon.

  16. I love the work that Dove is doing. This is one of the reasons that I buy Dove products.

  17. Kids can be so terrible to eachother… but then again, so can adults. Thanks for being such a good example to her. 🙂

  25. Love how Dove empowers girls with this campaign! Such a beautiful initiative!

  26. 10 is such a tough age. I’m sorry your niece was having anything less than a perfect experience at school, but it’s good to know Dove is working to help girls build self-esteem.

  27. It’s a shame that we all have to go through this in school. Being picked on for how you look just sucks and it is even more challenging now with social media. I love the Dove campaign because it does help girls see themselves as more than looks. We all have something to offer and having a strong self-esteem can help you weather this crazy world.

  28. You did a great job. I’m glad your niece got her self esteem back. I love using Dove products.

  30. This project is the best! I love Dove movements. Dove products are fabulous too.

  31. This is a great cause – – So many girls need an extra boost of self esteem!

  32. Dove is the best for so many reasons. I ate sure to tell my daughters all the things I love about her that do not involve their looks.

  33. I love that you were there when she needed you. It’s hard to teach our girls self worth when TV, peers and magazines are saying something else.

  34. I love this campaign from Dove! A couple of years ago I learned that the average girls’ self-esteem peaks at age 9 and that reminded me of how important it is to teach self-esteem to young girls!

  35. This is awesome! there’s far too many influences out there trying to cut our children down. They are the leaders of the next generation and we need to nurture that.

  36. I love Dove not only because of their amazing products but also for their campaigns. They always support great cause that concerns women.

  37. I use Dove products but this project makes me love Dove products more! Such a great cause!

  38. I love that Dove has campaigns like this! Self esteem is really important especially to women! This is such an awesome project from Dove!

  39. I’m grateful that I haven’t had to deal with it. I talk to my son about his image for all the things that happen in our society and black boys, I think it is important for us to all talk to our children about their image.

  40. I love these campaigns that Dove puts on. I think it is always so important to foster young girls’ self esteem!

  41. I’ve always loved what Dove stands for. It breaks my heart hearing things like this! Poor kid. I remember getting bullied by a little boy in school and it hurts! I’m so happy there are companies out there trying to make a change!

  42. Dove has always made it a point to empower women regardless of their age! I am loving this project from them. Promoting self-love has never been better when you have a trusted brand backing you up.

  43. Every supermodel has had the same story. Tell her she’ll grow up to have a great metabolism and everyone will be jealous of her.

  44. I just love this campaign such a positive thing to do – I also love Dover products too big thumbs up from me

  45. Dove products are some of my favorite ones to purchase! I don’t think I’ve ever used one that I didn’t like.

  46. I love all of these campaigns that Dove runs! It is so important to love yourself, and teach your kids to love themselves. It is amazing to me how much bullying there is these days.

  47. Dove sounds like it is engaging in a very worthwhile project.
I am a fan of the brand.

  48. I love this project! It can be so hard as a young girl or women trying to grow up and navigating the twisted societal views we place on each other let alone boys who are taught what is pretty or ugly! Self-Esteem is definitely something they need more of!

  49. Dove’s self-esteem project sounds wonderful! We have been using Dove products for years and really like them.

  50. Wow at ten kids are this brutal? That is horrible! I have been seeing the Dove self-esteem campaign go around and even I will be participating in it its just a beautiful initative!

  51. I love that Dove is empowering young girls and women and helping them to improve their self-esteem. We need to teach them the importance of self-love.

  52. Bullying in school terrifies me and is a main reason I am debating homeschooling our children instead of public school. I love that Dove is helping combat this horrible thing that happens daily in schools.

  53. I love their body positive message! It’s just sovereignty hard for young girls these days. Bullying is awful.

  54. I have always loved Dove’s campaigns. It’s always consistent and well-crafted – always about loving yourself and teaching you that nothing is wrong with you. It’s good to know that even they’re communicating to a younger market here, they’re still consistent. Society dictates so many things, but at the end of the day, we need to empower ourselves and the younger generation.

    Kudos to Dove!

  55. Dove has made it a point to empower women, young and old. They’re amazing for what they do and they’ve made sure that women never lose their confidence.

  56. I love Dove. Seriously it is one of my favorite brands. I used to work at an agency on their deodorant and shampoo business.

  57. Not only are they are great company, their products are wonderful. I use almost all dove products and I love them. I love the way they smell and the way they work!

  58. I’m so sorry to hear that happened to your lovely niece. It’s so unfortunate how many of us women can totally relate no matter what the age of feeling that way some time in their life. I’m glad you were able to share your story with her and encourage her. Dove is such an amazing and empowering brand, I love all their campaigns.

  59. I love that you took the time out to spend with her like that…sometimes it’s someone else’s voice (besides mom or dad) that can really make the difference. Especially if it’s someone you know and love who is giving you the time and words. Hugs to you for being such a good aunt. 🙂

  60. This is such a great initiative and kudos to Dove for stepping up and making a difference. Not to mention, they have great products!
