About 14 months ago, I started taking Krav maga classes. Krav maga literally translates to “contact combat” and basically, it is a noncompetitive self-defense system developed in Israel that involves boxing, muay Thai, jiu-jitsu, wrestling, and grappling techniques, along with realistic fight training. In summation, someday I am going to be a ninja.

Anyways, one day they did some board breaking. At that point I had only been taking class for less than two months and I have to admit that I was really nervous.  I was the only “newbie” in the class and let’s face it, breaking a piece of wood with a body part looks totally intimidating. Some people, mostly higher level belts and/or black belts, chose to break their boards with some sort of kick. I chose a hammer fist strike and I completely surprised myself when the board actually broke on my first try.

I asked the sensei (and owner) if he would sign my board for me so that I could proudly display the two pieces of broken wood somewhere in my house. Actually, this is what I asked him to write:

He got a kick out of it. Since I was caught up in the moment, I wasn’t thinking and never asked anyone to take a picture of me doing it – and I knew that there are a few people that would never believe that I actually broke it – hence the “Robin actually broke this”. I was pretty impressed with myself and next time they do a board breaking class, I may try a kick. I’ll keep you posted.

  10. I’m always worried people are going to really hurt themselves when they try to break a board because that’s what always happens on America’s Funniest Home Videos! I’ve never had the desire to do any kind of martial arts, although training to a be a ninja might come in handy….

  11. That is definitely BADASS!!! I have heard of Krav maga, but never knew what it really meant. Sounds like a great choice of workout!!

  12. Congrats, that is badbuttawesome. 🙂

  13. Well, as a former Israeli military sergeant, kudos to you. 🙂 Krav maga is tough and I’ve had a lot of blue marks all over my body because of it. A lot of my defense training was actually ‘hand to hand’ krav maga combat with a rifle but you won’t be doing that I’m sure! Congrats on 14 months of hard work! I should retake it as well! I’ve gotten soft during the years.

  14. Great job on your first try Robin! I’ve been wanting to try things like this, I wish I had time :/

  37. I broke something in two once. It was a Styrofoam. I know it’s not the same awesome thing as your wood, but it was all my little hand (my hand hasn’t grown since I was 10) could muster when I took aikido. It was for show anyway 🙂

  38. Now that is awesome! Way to go 🙂 I love watching but haven’t mustered up the courage (or energy) to take a class yet. Very inspiring!
