About 14 months ago, I started taking Krav maga classes. Krav maga literally translates to “contact combat” and basically, it is a noncompetitive self-defense system developed in Israel that involves boxing, muay Thai, jiu-jitsu, wrestling, and grappling techniques, along with realistic fight training. In summation, someday I am going to be a ninja.
Anyways, one day they did some board breaking. At that point I had only been taking class for less than two months and I have to admit that I was really nervous. I was the only “newbie” in the class and let’s face it, breaking a piece of wood with a body part looks totally intimidating. Some people, mostly higher level belts and/or black belts, chose to break their boards with some sort of kick. I chose a hammer fist strike and I completely surprised myself when the board actually broke on my first try.
I asked the sensei (and owner) if he would sign my board for me so that I could proudly display the two pieces of broken wood somewhere in my house. Actually, this is what I asked him to write:
He got a kick out of it. Since I was caught up in the moment, I wasn’t thinking and never asked anyone to take a picture of me doing it – and I knew that there are a few people that would never believe that I actually broke it – hence the “Robin actually broke this”. I was pretty impressed with myself and next time they do a board breaking class, I may try a kick. I’ll keep you posted.
