Many of you know that we took a trip to San Diego last month and while I haven’t told you much about our trip yet (mainly because I haven’t had the time to sit down and write about it yet), but this just couldn’t wait.   Chris & I found ourselves scratching our heads on more than one occasion while we were in the Golden State and I couldn’t wait to share them.

A couple of times, as were were driving around from one place to another, we noticed a bit of a backup getting on to the highway (or freeway as they call it out there).  Both of us were baffled because the traffic on the highway appeared to be moving, but as we got closer we saw that it was because of these traffic lights that were letting cars enter onto the highway one or two at a time.  I don’t know if other parts of the country have them, but here in New England, we know how to get on the highway without any help, so we were kind of taken aback when we saw them.  They definitley slowed traffic down on the side roads/on-ramps.

California-WTF-traffic-light

Next I have a really good one.

We were driving by a little farm stand one of the days when a sign caught Chris’s attention.  It said “Ostrich eggs” and being curious, he pulled in to see what they meant by that.

This is what they meant by that:

California-WTF-Ostrich-Eggs

I Instagramed the picture and when I checked in, the first location that popped up was “Weird little farm stand” and a weird little farm stand it was.

Capture

I’m not really sure what people do with them, though.  Any thoughts?

Last, but not least, we were stalking celebrities driving down the sunset strip while we were in Hollywood one of the days and ended up behind this:

California-WTF-Duct-Taped-Car-Hollywood

Way to make use of that Duct Tape, huh?

That car could have been Adam Savages and another duct tape episode

  2. Debbie Denny says

    May 2, 2014 at 6:03 am

Just don’t know what to say about the duct tape… and the empty eggs ummm … must be something really special cause I sure would not pay that much for one egg with something in it… let alone empty.

  3. laurablue58 says

    May 2, 2014 at 6:38 am

I could have brought you emu eggs from Oz if you really wanted one.. lol.
    Did you spot any celebs?

  4. Kelley Beckett says

    May 2, 2014 at 6:43 am

What the hell? I think I’m going to go google what someone would use those eggs for. That is strange!!

  5. Janine Huldie says

    May 2, 2014 at 6:56 am

No words and made me happy that deep down I am still an East Coast girl!! 🙂

  6. kristimaloney says

    May 2, 2014 at 7:02 am

So that’s where you get empty ostrich eggs! $30 is a great price! lol Love the last photo. I mean at least be creative with your duct tape, there are so many patterns and colors these days! 😉

  7. Jen V says

    May 2, 2014 at 7:30 am

I live in a small town so I definitely think I would experience culture shock if I ever visited a huge city 🙂 I think those empty eggshells are used for crafts. If I remember correctly I saw a tutorial once where they were painted and used as decoration. But for $30 a piece… Yikes! That’s crazy!

  8. Gina says

    May 2, 2014 at 8:02 am

CA traffic is horrendous – I’ll take good old NY traffic any day!

  9. Carly Bellard says

    May 2, 2014 at 8:42 am

Atlanta just added those stupid lights too! They are meant to pace the merging traffic. It kinda works- sometimes. It is always weird waiting for the light to change- you gotta go 0-75 in what feels like 100 feet!

  10. Henrietta says

    May 2, 2014 at 8:56 am

lights to get onto the highway? That’s just odd! Eggs – maybe for decorative purposes? Seems a bit steep though! And hey! We’ve got lots of cars like that here in NW PA 🙂

  11. casavilorainteriors says

    May 2, 2014 at 9:06 am

Duct tape fixes everything……but that car bumper. That is too funny! I have been seeing a lot of WTF moments lately too!

  12. Rosey says

    May 2, 2014 at 9:09 am

That’s weird that they have a light going on to the highway. I’ve seen strange car repairs before and that one fits right in. 🙂

  13. amy pugmire says

    May 2, 2014 at 9:31 am

Ha ha ha that is so funny! gotta love California!!

    • Dina Demarest (@dinade) says

      May 2, 2014 at 9:49 am

what do you do with empty eggs? Wow that car seriously needs some help!!

  14. Theresa says

    May 2, 2014 at 10:36 am

Come to Indiana. You’ll see lots of Duct tape on cars. They are very redneck here. Maybe the eggs are used for art? I think I saw somewhere that people paint them or bejewel them, or some crazy stuff?

  15. krystal says

    May 2, 2014 at 11:09 am

Ya know, if my bumper was that busted, I’d just LET IT GO. I’d rather ride around with no bumper than a crazy duct taped one!

  16. aimee fauci says

    May 2, 2014 at 11:14 am

We visited CA once and I will say it is beautiful but I would never want to live there. We drove my some small houses… almost shack like and my husband explained how much those houses cost and I was amazed! Like they cost more than a nice house in TX… It is a different world.

  17. blm03 says

    May 2, 2014 at 11:28 am

The lights to get on the expressway are for traffic control. It makes it less of bottleneck and less accidents when they have them.

  18. popcosmo says

    May 2, 2014 at 11:31 am

I wonder if the “duct tape car” instructions comes in a crafting book? Oh, and maybe the merge lanes aren’t need in California, but in some states where the driver’s stink & are unfriendly (you know, where they speed up if you are trying to merge in?!), it makes merging possible.

  19. HilLesha says

    May 2, 2014 at 12:21 pm

Definitely some WTF moments, and those empty eggs sure are expensive! Haha.

  20. Jaime says

    May 2, 2014 at 2:13 pm

Duct tape to the rescue! I’ve actually seen those traffic lights before. (I also saw them when I was in LA a few years ago.) They can be helpful on occasion. otherwise, they are just annoying.

  21. Rorybore says

    May 2, 2014 at 2:25 pm

I am both fascinated and a little scared to know what people in La La Land do with empty egg shells. I am hoping it’s something simple like paint them and turn them into art.
The only thing I can think of with the on ramp lights, is that the freeways are so so busy with traffic, they are trying to regulate it. But honestly, if everyone knows how to drive properly, it shouldn’t be a problem.
My pet peeve is when you get on the on ramp — which you are supposed to use to get up to speed required to merge with highway traffic – and the person in front is still going like 50 km//hr and then tries to punch it last minute to catch up with the rest of traffic. The usually end up cutting someone off, or I’ve actually had to slow down because they couldn’t merge. Gggrrr. It’s called a speed ramp for a reason idiot.
Excellent use of duct tape. They could have bought some of the prettier stuff though. ha.

  22. Heather says

    May 2, 2014 at 4:13 pm

I’m with the others, my first thought is some weird egg craft. Maybe for Easter, since you were traveling then.

  23. Hanan Webster (@EatCraftParent) says

    May 2, 2014 at 4:20 pm

The traffic lights aren’t weird to me, but we have them up in WA too. They help spread out the cars getting on the freeway, and usually the lights only run certain times a day. As for the eggs…why on earth would you want an empty egg??

  24. Amber NElson says

    May 2, 2014 at 5:02 pm

Always something so chaotic going on there at all times.

  25. Jennifer Brazil says

    May 2, 2014 at 5:37 pm

LOL maybe people use the eggs for some sort of art project? I have no idea though!

  26. Autumn says

    May 2, 2014 at 5:39 pm

We have those interstate ramp lights on some of the busier exits (Atlanta) but they aren’t standard.
Those emu and ostrich eggs – EMPTY?! You mean people pay that much money and don’t end up with a pet or breakfast?

  27. Patrick Weseman says

    May 2, 2014 at 7:19 pm

Some politicians here love them and people say that they relieve the congestion on the highways by breaking up platoons of cars.

    I hate them.

  28. TheHouseholdHero.com (@HouseholdHeroMC) says

    May 2, 2014 at 7:37 pm

Wow those are all very strange. I’m from the South and we don’t need any assistance getting on and off roads of any kind. Crazy what alot of duct tape can do!

  29. adashofsanity says

    May 2, 2014 at 8:35 pm

This seriously made me laugh, what the heck people are funny.

  30. Taralyn - Keep Moving Forward With Me says

    May 2, 2014 at 8:45 pm

Our freeway entrances are like that at rush hour as well!

  31. Pam (@pamwattenbarger) says

    May 2, 2014 at 8:46 pm

I’ve seen those lights to get onto the highway before! They always annoy me when I’m in a city with them. It just seems to slow everything down even more.

  32. valmg @ Mom Knows It All says

    May 2, 2014 at 8:49 pm

I agree. I wonder what people do with empty emu and ostrich eggs.

  33. Jenn @ The Rebel Chick says

    May 2, 2014 at 8:50 pm

My understanding is the lights are because they get heavy and insane fast traffic at different times of the day.

  34. keikilanij says

    May 2, 2014 at 9:50 pm

Oh California! Such a fun and interesting state. Sounds like you had a great time!

  35. Trisha says

    May 2, 2014 at 10:07 pm

Yeah, those traffic lights are odd, we don’t have them here in NJ either! That last photo really made me LOL!

  36. Jenn says

    May 2, 2014 at 10:14 pm

Plus “emu” is spelled wrong. Ya got me!

  37. Chasing Joy says

    May 2, 2014 at 10:50 pm

Yeah those are all really weird. Im scratching my head too.

  38. Maria Constanza Oller Martin says

    May 2, 2014 at 11:20 pm

Wow the things you could do for Easter with those eggs, LOL

  39. Lia Moore says

    May 2, 2014 at 11:25 pm

Wow, what do you do with those eggs? Although they would be amazing decorated Faberge style!

  40. Chrysa says

    May 3, 2014 at 12:07 am

We have those lights here in Minnesota too. They’re supposed to help control the flow of traffic.

  41. Paula J says

    May 3, 2014 at 7:20 am

That’s interesting about the lights..around here doesn’t it seem like people just close their eyes when getting on the highway? No yielding whatsoever.

  42. mamatomanyblessings says

    May 3, 2014 at 7:45 am

Wow Emu and ostrich eggs are so expensive! What a great post, neat to see the craziness on other parts of the USA!

  43. savoryexperiments says

    May 3, 2014 at 8:53 am

Hahaha! Those people in Cali sure have a different culture than the rest of the US!

  44. sippycupmom says

    May 3, 2014 at 9:12 am

So weird, ha! There is no way I could handle the traffic there!

  45. coolchillmom says

    May 3, 2014 at 9:41 am

traveling is just amazing, it gets us to wonder one way or another! that duck tape takes the cake! I am going to start paying more attention because we get a lot of that around here, but those, sadly, dont stand out to us anymore

  46. carlybrydon says

    May 3, 2014 at 9:48 am

Aw, you were in my town…..we should have gotten together!!!

  47. Teena in Toronto says

    May 3, 2014 at 11:07 am

That highway light doesn’t sound very efficient. I’d be soooooo cranky waiting for my turn!

What does one do with a $30 empty ostrich egg?

I will admit to duct taping a fallen hem on my pants because I’m too lazy to sew it.

  48. Jennifer Williams says

    May 3, 2014 at 12:21 pm

I am currently studying to take my drivers test in our new star and was shocked when I had to learn about the stoplights to enter the freeway/highways.We did not have them down South so maybe it is a Western thing?
Maybe people use the eggs for some sort of craft projects, I would not pay that much for them nor would I have a clue what to do with them.
Duct tape makes many great things, lol. I bet it was the cheapest car repair ever!

  49. Christie says

    May 3, 2014 at 1:36 pm

Duct tape is cheaper 🙂 What an interesting day in Cali!

  50. My Journey With Candida says

    May 3, 2014 at 1:37 pm

People probably use the empty eggs for decorations of some sort. I don’t know who would want them in their house though.

  51. Joanna Sormunen says

    May 3, 2014 at 2:40 pm

Well, that was a weird little farm stand. Wonder if they color them? Giant Easter eggs…

  52. valmg @ Mom Knows It All says

    May 3, 2014 at 4:12 pm

I daresay I bet that isn’t the “300 mph” version they use on racecars! I’d just take the bumper off.

  53. Pauline Cabrera (@Twelveskip) says

    May 3, 2014 at 4:20 pm

Seems like you had an awesome trip Robin! Haha, I love that car! LOL.

  54. Foodie in WV says

    May 3, 2014 at 4:53 pm

The traffic lights are to control the traffic flow. They were all over the place on the on ramps in Seattle growing up. We don’t have them here though 🙂

  55. Pam says

    May 3, 2014 at 5:10 pm

Hey! You are poking fun at my stomping grounds, LOL. Yes the lights are to control the traffic. Otherwise, those of here in Southern California would all enter the freeway at the same time pushing and shoving and create chaos. Well that already happens anyway.

I think the duct tape makes quite a fashion statement myself.

  56. Shell says

    May 3, 2014 at 7:28 pm

Creative use of duct tape! I have no idea why anyone would want one of those eggs!

  57. Melissa @ This Girl's Life Blog says

    May 3, 2014 at 10:13 pm

I have never seen lights like that but my guess would be because of so much traffic it is harder to merge on like a regular highway/interstate. I don’t know! I have seen people turn ostrich eggs into art pieces but a little to ornate for my taste. The car with the duct tape, ha! He should have used gorilla tape apparently. lol

  58. jamie4flanary says

    May 3, 2014 at 10:26 pm

These are so good! But I must know did you see any celebrities!

  59. Amanda H. says

    May 3, 2014 at 10:49 pm

That duct-taped bumper is something else! Might as well pull the darn thing off!

  60. Aisha Kristine Chong says

    May 4, 2014 at 6:41 am

Lol. Now, that duct tape on the bumper is something you don’t see everyday. Lol!

  61. Onica {MommyFactor} says

    May 4, 2014 at 7:29 am

Oh my gosh what odd incidents. I can kinda understand the ostrich eggs (food!) but the duct tape car? No way. LOL

  62. Amanda @ Erickson and Co says

    May 4, 2014 at 9:06 am

Haha the duct tape car is hilarious! Those stop lights actually help traffic stay moving on the freeway. I don’t live in california and we don’t have them where I do live. When I visited another state I had to ask someone what they were for!

  63. Love and Duck Fat says

    May 4, 2014 at 9:36 am

I love travelling for this reason. You see so many things that make you go, “huh?”.

  64. Fabulous Perks says

    May 4, 2014 at 3:55 pm

This post had me cracking up! I really enjoyed reading it.

  65. Ashley Gill says

    May 4, 2014 at 5:16 pm

What an awesome post! That car!! Oh my goodness! I wonder how many rolls they used to keep it up! Also, a stop light to enter the freeway? That’s just idiotic! I imagine they have a good reason, but I suppose I’ll not understand it.

  66. Aisha Kristine Chong says

    May 4, 2014 at 7:17 pm

So resourceful of the car owner to actually use a duct tape on it, lol! It’s really funny and crazy though, haha!

  67. Amber NElson says

    May 4, 2014 at 8:30 pm

You can definitely use duct tape for anything, so I am learning.

  68. Amanda Ripsam says

    May 4, 2014 at 10:08 pm

were does one order ostarage eggs. ? I live in Michigan I’ve seen lot’s of duct tape cars

  69. Coasahm12 says

    May 4, 2014 at 10:58 pm

I’m definitely curious about the eggs … why on earth would anyone want to purchase them LoL

  70. Debi says

    May 5, 2014 at 6:42 am

I am not sure why anyone would an egg like that but ok.

  71. Jamie Rippy (@MamaMommyMom) says

    May 5, 2014 at 8:28 am

I’m curious about the eggs… Now, as a crafter, I could see some cool things that you could do with the eggs, but not for $20/$30. No way. And I love the duct tape. LOL

  72. StacieinAtlanta says

    May 5, 2014 at 9:39 am

We have those metered lights in Atlanta. They are great during rush hour at keeping traffic moving a little bit….but there are other times when they seem to be on for no good reason….very annoying.

  73. Alissa Apel says

    May 5, 2014 at 9:57 am

    That poor car! LOL

My Dad grinds up egg shells, soaks them in water and drinks the water for extra calcium. I have no clue if it works. He claims it does. How would he really know? I’ve used egg shells in paintings before. I’m not really sure. They sure are pricy for an empty shell.

  74. Alison says

    May 5, 2014 at 10:11 am

That is so strange they use traffic lights to get onto the highway.. what is up with that!?

  75. Krissy Higgins (@Krissy_r) says

    May 5, 2014 at 10:27 am

I’d love to agree that everyone knows how to merge, but driving in Cincinnati over the past 18 years I can understand why they use a light, lol. But that would drive me CRAZY!

  76. Anne Newsome says

    May 5, 2014 at 11:24 am

Very interesting experiences! LOL Must have been a different type of trip for sure!

  77. Ashley M says

    May 5, 2014 at 2:30 pm

Those lights we would annoy me too. I also live on the east coast and feel the same way.

  78. Laura says

    May 5, 2014 at 3:49 pm

those lights just sounds strange! and, haha, great duct tape job!

  79. Janeane Davis says

    May 5, 2014 at 11:15 pm

I am curious about those empty eggs as well. If you ever find out what people do with the, please share!

  80. Brett Martin (@brettbmartin) says

    May 6, 2014 at 10:14 pm

i snorted at your driving comment. we in new england do know how to get on the highway without help!!

  81. What's That Smell? ~ Kim says

    May 13, 2014 at 9:25 am

California is a whole other planet. When we lived there someone tried to sell me “steak” from the back of a pickup truck in the Walmart parking lot.
