Spread the love

Chris and I spent the weekend in Newport, RI.  Whenever we get a chance to go away without the kids, that’s usually where we end up.  It’s only about a 45 minute drive from where we live and there are so many cool things to do in Newport – including some really good eating establishments (and you all know my love of eating), tours of the famous Newport Mansions and tons of shops to visit.  Plus, we get wicked cheap lodging at the Naval Base down there because Chris is in the military, so  it doesn’t cost us an arm & a leg for an entire weekend away.

Anyways, we were looking for something different to do while we were there last weekend and about a month go, I did some snooping around and came across a link to this place called The Firehouse Theater.  They have live improv comedy shows there every weekend featuring a comedy troupe called the Bit Players.  I’ve seen live improv before, but Chris hadn’t, so we decided that we’d check it out.

When we got to the theater, we checked in at the desk and then were able to seat ourselves once we paid.   I’m not positive, but I’d guesstimate that there are somewhere around 75 seats in the theater and we picked seats right in the front row since we were there nice and early.  Here’s a picture of the stage.

The place itself was pretty laid back.  Chris and I had a few laughs over the ghetto chairs they had in a few of the rows.  Don’t worry – there were only three or four of them in there.

Plus, the theater is BYOB, so you can bring in whatever kind of booze you want.  They provided some waters & sodas in a cooler at no charge (but of course you can leave a donation to help out).  We brought in a few adult beverages and some snacks.  I liked that we could bring in the stuff we liked and didn’t have to worry about them not having something we like on the menu.

The show lasted for almost two whole hours and was absolutely hysterical.    I kid you not, we were in tears for a good part of the night.  And the best part is that it’s improv and everything is made up right there on the spot.  Some of the numbers were musical and some weren’t – but regardless, they were all funny as hell.

I was actually going to take a video of one of their bits with my iPhone, but then I wasn’t sure if it was illegal or something, so I didn’t.  The last thing I need is to end up in the hokey because of some illegal iPhone video streaming, right?

But I digress……you can see some of their bits on their website if you’d like.

The Firehouse Theater is located at 4 Equality Park Place in Newport, RI 02840.  You need to call them for reservations if you’re planning on going to the show and their number is: (401) 849-FIRE (3473).  They have shows every Friday & Saturday Night at 8 pm and they only charge $15 per seat.  What a cheap night out, huh?

I can’t tell you how highly I recommend that you check out one of their shows.  Chris and I went to their Friday night show at 8 pm and loved it so much that we went back for their Saturday night show at 8 pm – and we ended up staying for their encore show at 10 pm on Saturday night.  All the shows are filled with audience interaction/participation, so the audience is a big part of the direction that the show takes.

Seriously, if you live in the area, go!  You won’t be sorry.

  9. That place sounds really neat! I love improv, I used to see a ton of shows like this when I lived in NYC. Good to know there are shows like that still around in a fairly close vicinity.

  10. Wow what a neat place I’ve never been to one where you can bring in outside stuff, we you know with out sneaking it in my purse … lol.

What a fun time you guys had.

  11. Awesome! It sounds so fun. Love that you can bring your own snacks and drinks to the theater. I’ve been to a couple places like this and they are always so much fun.

  12. Thank you so much for the review! We love to hear back from our audience members. It is always interesting since no two shows are ever the same and people’s tastes vary as much as fingerprints yet the majority of people seem to LOVE our show. There is no better feeling than to make the world laugh. Thank you again! We hope to make you laugh in the future!

  13. That sounds fun! I love that it was BYOB.

  14. Looks like a fun escape. You’ve got to leave the kids every now and then.

  15. I think every town needs an improv. I think the fact that they allow you to BYOB is a bummer, though. Half the fun is sneaking stuff in. I guess I’ll have to settle for smuggling dollar-store candy into the movies and Wendy’s burgers in my cargo pants into baseball games.

  16. This sounds like a lot of fun! I would take my friend Kathy to this…she would love it!

  17. A BYOB Theatre? Okay, clearly I am living in the wrong city… I would have been thrown outta there before it even started.

  18. I wish we lived closer! I love comedy clubs!

  19. Looks like a pretty cool place! Wish we had something like that close by!

  20. Sounds like fun and a really cool place!

  21. Sounds like a fun evening, despite the ghetto chairs. 🙂 Newport is a great town!

  22. Is it wrong that i LOVE that it’s BYOB? 🙂

  23. Sounds wonderful! Looks like you had a great time. 🙂

  24. Must be a good time if you went twice in a weekend! I like entertainment like that but there’s not usually those kind in my city.

  25. I love places that are BYOB and snacks. I am super picky about food and drinks, so I love being able to bring something that I can actually drink. Plus since I have to drink gluten free beer or cider I don’t really have a choice!

  26. Sounds like my kind of theatre!

  27. Now I know where my next date will be! YAY BYOB!!!
